Can I bump up my machine on my own?

Post by SplashMom » Tue Aug 12, 2008 6:24 pm

I've already learned more from y'all than I have from my sleep doctor or the lab. I called today and got the results of my sleep study (one from five years ago when it was determined I didn't need cpap and one from about three weeks ago when I had another study to titrate to cpap). According to the first sleep study done in 2003, I had one central apnea event (19.6 seconds) and one obstructive apnea event (14.6 seconds). I experienced 70 obstructive hypopnea events. My doctor told me at that time that I should train myself to sleep on my sides which I did. I haven't had much trouble up until June of this year when I went to the E.R. with severe chest pain. I won't repeat the story, but here's a link, if interested. viewtopic/t33895/Newbie-here--Please-he ... night.html

Any way, I have not been able to sleep more than 2 hours with the mask on. I've done as others suggested and worn it some during the day while reading, etc. I'm finding that after an hour and a half or two of sleep, I'm ripping the mask off. Last night, I realized I am doing it because I feel like I'm not getting enough air. My setting is currently at 8. I'm back and forth between the nasal mask and the hybrid mask because I can't decide which one is better for me. When I wake up panicky with one of them, I switch out and try to go back to sleep. My most recent sleep study (with cpap) indicated zero apnea events and 25 hypopnea events. I guess, in the end, my question is ... can I bump my pressure up to 9 by myself or do I need my doctor's okay and the company who provided the machine to set it?

Thanks again for all the info here. I've done lots of reading on the newbie page, but wasn't sure about re-setting the machine. Thanks!

Don't know why not......
Just be sure to write down all of the existing settings before changing anything.

Thanks so much for the quick reply! I hope to some day be as knowledgeable and helpful as so many here have been. I'll give it a whirl tonight.

SplashMom,

While you're in the setup menu turn on the setting that lets you see your AHI & Leak statistics on the lcd screen if it isn't on already. Unfortunatly you can only see the 7 day & 30 day averages on the LCD. If you want to have more detailed data you need to buy the card reader & software (you can get them from our host at cpap.com).

Try it ALL out before bed time. It takes time to get used to sleeping with a mask on period. Never mind sleeping ALL nite. Just sleep as long as you can and keep trying.

Good Luck,

There's an option in there called "Auto Off". I don't know what the default setting is, but I recommend setting it to "OFF". That way, if you have a large leak (for a certain period) during the night, it won't shut the machine off and will keep blowing air to keep you breathing.
