CPAP and Naps
I'm a big napper - at least during the summer (I'm a teacher). Now I know that my daytime sleepiness is from the apnea but I'm not at the treatment stage yet that I think collective wisdome called "Mental Zest". I'm only on day 2 and still want my naps. Usually I lay down and read, then fall asleep for a while.
Should I put my mask on when reading just in case, or wait until I doze off, then wake up & put it on? My naps aren't too predictable, sometimes I lay down to read & never drift off, sometimes I get one page and I'm out.

If it was me, I would put it on to read in case I fell asleep. If you can help it, never sleep without your mask.
I learned this recently. My humidifier broke. I was only on my second week of treatment and feeling pretty good. The dry air hurt so much that I took off the mask and slept only a few hours without it. I felt miserable. All my symptoms were back.
Its a happy ending, machine is fixed now and I am on my way back to feeling better each day.

Put the mask on ahead of time. You probably jerk awake from an apnea - and there's no reason to risk that.
I use my mask (and machine) for all naps. They are ofter not more than 20 minutes long - but the cpap is in use nonetheless.

Yes. that makes sense. It's not like I'm "using it up" by using it waiting to fall asleep for a nap.ozij wrote:Put the mask on ahead of time. You probably jerk awake from an apnea - and there's no reason to risk that.

I have wanted to use my machine for naps but it is always dismantled since the humidifier, hose and mask are still drying from being cleaned. How do others get around this problem?
I have been having to clean the hose daily since I have not found a way around the rain out problem despite trying everything that was recommended. I just don't know what to do. I don't feel comfortable letting the hose sit there all day with moisture and then reusing it that night. I am afraid that I am going to give myself some nasty infection. Am I being too paranoid?

Oh, good point. I did not realize that the hoses were so inexpensive. I just put down a good sum of money to buy a second mask, hose cover, cleaning solution, and software/card reader. I am hoping that some will be picked up by my Flex-spending account. I will have to look into the heated hose. The cool night here in San Fran just don't seem to work with the set-up I have right now.

I went to cpap.com and did not find the heated hose, can anyone give me a part number or link to the page? I am having a LOT of problems with dry mouth, i have a full face mask, but i guess i still open my mouth and i wake up several times a night some times my mouth is glued shut! Mabey a heated hose would help......
i just got my bill for my equipment.crossfit wrote: I don't think they are very expensive - about $10 or so on cpap.com, probably more at your DME.
they charged the insurance company $57 for my 6ft hose.
I have to pay 45 of it.
I wonder if they will be able to figure out sometime in the future why I won't buy anything from them
I use a heated hose.
Dismantle it daily from mask and humidifier, "remantle" it for naps when I take them.
I use a $4 hose quick connect which I change every few months. You can use them on both sides of the hose.
My heated hose is now 3 years old.

Re:
Try putting salt (like kosher salt) in your humidifier - it keeps bacteria from growing - VERY effective at preventing infections. it is harmless from what I have seen. VERY effective at keeping bacteria from growing in the warm / moist environment.Pekoepup wrote: I am afraid that I am going to give myself some nasty infection. Am I being too paranoid?
Never use tap water - always use distilled water.
