moisture without heat?

Post by gracie97 » Sat Jul 16, 2005 3:11 am

Using a (rented) RemStar Pro 2 and finding that even the 1 setting on the humidifier feels uncomfortably hot to me.

However my nostrils are getting dried out with the small amount of moisture I get with no heat at all. I keep it filled to the fill line, but that doesn't help much.

Any ideas about how to get more moisture without going to the jungle-steam 1 setting?

Two ideas I've had that might have problems:

1) Adding a tiny bit of salt to the water (would that make it evaporate more easily?)

2) Floating some sort of wicking material over the surface of the water (idea is to increase the surface area).

Would another kind of humidifier be better for cool moisture?

My eyes have been really dry since starting CPAP also -- is that a common issue?
Started CPAP on 7/1/2005

I really do not like heat on my face either and I find the fisher and paykel stand alone heated humidifier great and to me that does not give out a lot of heat at all. It has 5 settings and I keep it on 3. My pressure is 13.

It does however give me a lot of humidity, which I desperately need for my face and throat. I do keep the temperature in my room though no more than 24 degrees and that possibly helps.

It may be worth trying to hire or borrow one if you can.

Salt is not a good idea..will actually make more steam and will intensify the problem....not sure what it will do to the equipment. I actually responded to this in another post about heat and humidity. Use saline nasal spray daily...you can use limitless amounts of it. Read the suggestions on the other post. I just got rid of a Fisher-Paykel and am using an integrated set at 2. Have found the integrated much cooler.

Hi there! have you run the machine while leaving the humidifier off but filled with water? If that hasn't been the answer, consider the Respironics "passover" humidifier which is not heated at all. Best wishes!

Sorry, my speed reading leaves something to be desired. Ignore the first part but take a look at the passover humidifier, it has a larger surface area (the entire footprint of the machine) and presumably is able to send more moisture up the hose. I had one with my first machine but never used it in favor of the heated one. Bye!

You could try adding a sponge with part of sticking out of the water on the side. The Respironics pass-over humidifier looks like it may do the job. Your DME may have one. If you ever get a auto CPAP you may want to double check to see if a Passover humidifier is going to work on that model.
