Anyone at a setting of 14 or higher?

Post by My_Dream » Tue Aug 05, 2008 10:30 am

Just trying to understand and research. Is there anyone out there that has there machine set higher than 14 with no mask leakage issues and sleep on there stomache? If so, do you find your self rested in the morning with no more then approximately 8 hours in bed.?

I began my treatment with a press setting of 8 to 16 using an S8 autoset II with a nasal Swift mask. Due to issues with mouth leaks and occational sinus congestion I switched to a Resmed Liberty mask which allows me to breath without concern. I then began a regimen over several weeks to try and control my AI and HI numbers. I first had to wrestle with mask leaks due to sleeping on my side. I increased the minimum pressure over several weeks allowing time for stabilization. Two weeks ago I reached 14.2 minimum pressure and saw dramatic results. all my numbers fell within the normal range and I feel much better. The only issue I still have is controlling mask leaks. I wash my mask every day (without disassembling it) and shave very closely every evening. Good luck with your research.

If you want to see serious leaks look at any of the most recent charts here - some nights the leaks are constant and large all night. Reason is I am growing a beard & since the day I started doing so (approx 3.5 weeks ago) my lekas have gone through the roof.

But then look at the pressure delivered by my machine - up to 20 CMS - then look at the HI & AI data (less than 1.0 per night if counted accurately).

Plus I am getting very good sleeps.

Point here is that the right machine can handle any challenge & deliver sterling results.

DSM

Look 1st at the charts starting with 56 & work back.

Hello,

In the lab setting, the majority of people who sleep on their stomach will experience some mask leakage no matter what. Their face will be jambed sidways into the pillow which presses the masks out of place. Instant leak. Your pressure of 14.0 isn't going to help either. We always tell them to turn over at least onto their sides to get somewhat of a better seal. The best position is on your back, but some people have back problems and cannot do it.

I am hoping that I can find a combination that will work. I have added a foam wedge to elevate my head with a foam pillow that allows my head to tilt back slightly. Now if I can only train myself to stay on my back. Those who have had back surgery will understand that issue.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. The main reason I don't sleep on my back is because for most of my life every time I did I stopped breathing. I'm lucky in the sense that I was able to devise a way to wake myself up with the help of a nightmare every time I was on my back. Funny how that works, I only have nightmares when I'm sleeping on my back and this lets me know that I am sleeping on my back and that I need to wake up soon since I'm not breathing.
It's not going to be easy learning to sleep on my back since my brain tells me NEVER EVER sleep on your back.

I also purchased the Swift LT a couple days ago and has helped although I do believe that I need to change my pillow since it's to bulky and not comfortable for me.

By the way the http://www.AdvansCPAP.com link didn't work for me either.

Hello,

Sorry about the links not working. Our website hosting company's server has been under attack since Monday. Hopefully it will be up and running ASAP.

Why do you want to learn to sleep on your back?? It is much easier to find a better mask than to increase your pressure to 90000 cm H2O ...

There are many people (probably MOST of them) who successfully sleep on their side and/or stomach and don't have mask leak problems.... just need to find the right mask!

Good point Echo.

Dream, Find a mask that you can use while side sleeping. You may require a much higher pressure on your back. My back pressure is 19 cm but on my side 8,5 cm works perfectly.

That said, it's probably easier said than done to find the right mask.
Here's a page from our Collective Wisdom on finding masks (general info):
CPAP mask choices

You might try starting another thread with another title asking for "masks to use with a pressure of 14" ...

Also you might want to PM Babette about her NAII trial -- that should also work at higher pressures from what I've read.

My_Dream, you might try the OptiLife nasal pillows mask. I am a three position sleeper but try to spend 75% of my time on the right or left side and this mask works very well for a side sleeper and might work for a stomach sleeper. I would try to stay on your stomach or side, sleeping on your back is really bad for OSA.

Regards,

Dan
