PROVIGIL

Post by handee3 » Fri Aug 01, 2008 4:17 pm

I've been having mixed results with my cpap therapy, so my Doc. gives me Provigil. Took my first 200mg pill and ended up napping twice today. Don't feel any difference. I was planning on only taking it on days I need it. Do I have to take this on continious days to feel any results or should this work on the 1st day? Thanks for your help!

Call your dr or the pharmacist.

If there were no adverse effects, what's the harm of sticking with it for a few days in a row? Body chemistry is so variable (some would feel uncomfortably jittery on 200mg, and some people find no effect from Provigil at all), that's the only way to find out in YOUR case.

This is also known as a "smart" drug. Google it and see what you find.

Oh, it is a SMART drug? WWWWOOOOOO! What was its IQ? Was that on a Wechsler or a Stanford-Binet or some other test administered by a trained professional? Or, did the Provigil simply take another of those computer tests that show up on MySpace or Facebook? Image

Seriously, though...

I take Provigil and if I am truly tired enough, I will nap. I have found since starting CPAP therapy, I no longer can STAND to be sleep deprived. While my improvement been slow and subtle, I do believe that my sleep deficit has now been repaid.

Another consideration is that Provigil was approved as a treatment drug for ADD/ADHD. That can mean that if one is ADD/ADHD, Image then the Provigil may effectively slow down hyperactivity and decrease the tendency toward distraction. Image

Mellabella makes a good point. It can take a few weeks to fully acclimate oneself to a new regime of any kind. The body adapts more slowly than we may wish.

Handee,

I suggest the doc is taking the easy and quick way out for himself by prescribing Provigil. The doc does not have time to help you tweak your cpap therapy but he can quickly write a script.

If you haven't already, why don't you start another thread telling people what is going on and let cpaptalk forum members help with the tweaking? This was a big key for success for me and many others here.

Best of luck.

Provigil

Post by Arizona-Willie » Fri Aug 01, 2008 8:11 pm

Although I am 100% compliant and have a fair good AHI ( most of the time ) I still get sleepy during the day. At least I was .. lately since using my chinstrap it isn't as bad.

Doc gave me samples of Provigil and it seemed to help a tiny bit so I had him give me a script and got some.

Provigil works any time you take it. Doc said I could skip days if I didn't feel I needed to take it.

One of the biggest problems is the cost. Retail is about $11 a pill.

But, you can get it from India for $2 a pill ... but you didn't hear that from me

But you don't need to let it build up to be effective according to my Doc. Kinda like aspirin with a headache. Take the pill ... it should work.

I had a 2nd sleep study and that night i had a PERFECT night sleep. Even though days before and days after I had some apneas and some snoring with the cpap. She said she was going by those results so she gave me Provigil. I am however starting to try different full face masks(1st mask leaks too much) and will be trying a chin strap. I know, I should get a new Doc...that will be my next move.

I just got a script for Porvigil and haven't filled it yet but the Doc also set me up for another sleep study with the narcolepsy test. After 4 months of Bipap I am just as tired as I was before Bipap.
