Post by bones1000 » Tue Jul 29, 2008 2:19 pm

Who if anybody uses salt water in there humidifier. If so do you clean it everyday. Do you make your own saltwater. Do you turn on the heater. I have alergies and was thinking about trying this

You REALLY DON'T want to do that!!!

ONLY use DISTILLED water in your humidifier chamber.

In reality, the salt could/would do more damage to your machine than to YOU.

The water in a humidifier simply evaporates into the airstream. Any salt (whether NaCl or calcium or iron or copper compounds) originally in the water, simply stays in the remaining water. As water evaporates, the remaining salts / minerals become increasingly concentrated, and can eventually precipitate out. Such a mineral coating can impair heat transfer into the humidifier chamber, can provide an environment for microbial growth, and can generally ruin your humidifier chamber.

There is no therapeutic benefit; it is not the same as a saline nasal spray.

I fully agree with what others have already said. You do NOT want to do this.

Well put Velbor. That describes it perfectly.
