OT Retiring today

Post by Catnapper » Wed Jul 30, 2008 7:28 am

Sorry about the off topic thread.

Today is my last day of regular work. I am retiring. I expect many changes in my life now, and certainly I have plans to do lots of things, including taking better care of myself in the diet and exercise areas.

Anyone have any insights to share? What is it like not to work after all these years? Suggestions? Advice on dealing with Medicare? Will getting rid of the tension improve my sleep patterns? I sure hope the insomnia disappears.

What else can I expect?

Good luck, Joanie!

Re the exercise area: do it slowly and gradually, and consistently. Don't overdo - even when is seem too easy in the beginning. Injuries happen when we get carried away by the "mind over matter" business. That may be true of people attempting to be better that others. But if your aim is to be good to yourself, then mind and body have to learn to work together.

To take analogy from one of my favorite authors (Sheldon Kopp): - it's not a case of a rider controlling a horse. It's a centaur.

Exercise should be enjoyed in the here and now, not only for what it will do for you later.

Joanie,

Congratulations and good luck!

I have a few more years to go, so I don't have any first-hand experiences of what to expect, to relate to you.

Congratulations, Joanie, I am so envious!

One thing I planned on doing on retirement (no longer in my vocabulary since my divorce ) was volunteer work. I do it now but with limited time. Keep it in mind, it's a wonderful way to help others and keep your mind active and young. Try finding a volunteer program that has interests in your hobbies or even something that will give you exercise in the process.

It's a win win situation.

Good luck and enjoy what you've worked all your life for.

CONGRATULATIONS, MOM!

I highly recommend retirement. Please note that entering retirement is not easy. It took me a year not to immediately jump up and feel as if I had to do something right then.

The best advice that I received before my retirement was "Retire to something not from something."

Amos

BTW, do you have any retirement cake left over.

When I retired we sold the house, put everything in storage and went on what was supposed to be a 3 to 6 month road trip in our motor home after which we planned to buy another house in a warmer place and settle down.

After a year we were having too much fun to settle down so we bought a new, bigger motor home and six years later we are still touring the US.

For the last two summers we have acted as volunteer park hosts at a state park in Idaho.

At first it took a little while to realize that we didn't have to get up at a set time and we didn't have to travel if we wanted to stay another day or week for that matter.
We persevered, broke out of the "vacation" mind set and now every day is Saturday.
Enjoy your retirement!!

Good luck, I hope your health allows you to enjoy your remaining years. It's important for you to fine something you like to do to stay active, and it's even better if it's something that can be shared. Jim
