AI Too High?

Post by Weezer » Tue Jul 22, 2008 8:10 am

Howdy, folks. Haven't posted in awhile. I'm using the ResMed Vantage with a Swift mask -- every night for about 6 or 7 hours -- which, believe me, was a struggle to get there.

But I've noticed my AI is consistently over 3. (My HI is often over 10, but I've chosen to focus on my AI for now.)

I was diagnosed with about 20 events/hour (30 on my back) and titrated at 6 in the sleep lab. Right now I'm in APAP mode: min. 6 max 7, 30 min settling time.

Question: what should I do to improve my score? Should I fiddle with the settings some more?

I gotta say, I'm feeling pretty good these days -- but I'd like to reach that coveted "AHI under 5" that everyone on this board seems to be going for and some seem to be achieving.

Thoughts? Advice?

If it was me and I had those numbers and pressure I would keep a journal...recording my numbers and the pressure. I would bump up both numbers one or two points or I would try cpap at 8 for a week. If that didn't work I would try 9 and then 10 for the top numbers until I found a point where my AI was lower. Of course you need to be aware of leaks..keeping them at a minimum... and to make sure you are not mouth breathing.

Like "track" said........more pressure and straight CPAP. Most people have worse numbers with an Auto.

Den

(5) REMstar Autos w/C-Flex & (6) REMstar Pro 2 CPAPs w/C-Flex - Pressure Setting = 14 cm.
"Passover" Humidification - ResMed Ultra Mirage FF - Encore Pro w/Card Reader & MyEncore software - Chiroflow pillow

Quick, BEFORE SD gets here - you didn't post what your leak rate was!!! LOL

But yea, gentle bumps in the pressure might bring you home or try the auto mode to see IF that helps.

I like mine in auto to help w/subtle differences each nite but it needs to be setup right too.

I would:

1. Leave Minimum pressure set to 6.0 cm and in AutoSet mode.
2. Increase Maximum pressure to 12 cm.
3. Continue use of Settling for 30 minutes.
4. Keep an eye on leak.

Your AI is high because your current setting PREVENT the machine from responding to apnea above 6.0 cm. By increasing the Maximum limit the machine can now move up from 6.0 to 12 cm during sleep to address apnea that may occur there.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

My leak rate is pretty low -- some nights even 0.

Question: does low leak rate mean I'm definitely not mouth breathing?
