Throat irritation and coughing

Post by flyingejk51 » Tue Jul 22, 2008 3:52 am

Is it common to have a problem with an itchy irritated throat
which causes coughing? Occurs more often when laying down. It seem Cpap is irritating sinuses causing flem to run down throat.
Any clues More or less humifidifcation? or no humidification?
Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks
Eddie

Welcome, Eddie.
Please check the equipment you put on your profile. A "Sandman Intro" and and software don't really make sense together. Are you sure you have both of them?

As for your problem, I would guess at one or both of the following:

1. No enough humidification - which is causing a kind of protective over reaction by your tissues
2. Mouth breathing (or leaking)

Try adding humidity first.

Two further things worth considering:
If your equipment is new: soak the hose in soapy water for about 30-60 minutes, and do the same for any soakable part of the mask.

I would also suggest you rinse the humidifier if you hadn't done so before the first use.

And then, it is also possible that you are simply coming down with a cold....

O.

Hi
Thanks for the quick response, to both of you I am on a low dose of blood pressure medication not sure what effect that has, I will try to up the humidifer on the Sandman to see if it makes a difference, I used my Resmed S7 lihtweiht last night (Sandman is packed away ready for a trip to Oshkosh WI later this week) with a high humidification and that was better so I think we might be on the right track.
The Sandman Intro comes with a memory reader card, I haven't used it

Thanks again

Eddie

For some blood pressure medications (like Lisinopril) one of the side effects is coughing. It was horrible for me three years ago when I started taking it and started CPAP therapy. I had to switch to something else (Diovan).
One can Google whatever medications they're taking and find out many things, including the side effects.
