Noisy Resmed S8 elite

Post by GoodnightHoser » Wed Jul 16, 2008 9:24 pm

Hi Y'all--just came back from my second sleep study. Tech gave me a smaller cradle cushion than I had (went from a medium to a small). It leaked a little less and I actually SLEPT for a couple hours. She moved me from a 12 to an 8. I have never slept at home for more than 2 or 3 hours a night since I was diagnosed 4 months ago and a big reason is my extremely annoying Darth Vadar like machine. I have to wear earplugs just to attempt to fall asleep! The machine at the sleep clinic just had a pleasant hum. Made a HUGE difference for me. Is the Resmed S8 just a noisy machine? Is there a nice quiet one out there that someone could recommend before I buy this one (it's still being leased)? I've checked the connections on the machine. I've put it on the floor practically under the bed. I've rapped it in a towel. I've tried everything. The noise it makes is like shshshshsh-wheeeeee, shsshshshshs-wheeeeee as I inhale and exhale. I have to take the machine back to get it reset but I wanted to ask you guys first. Another dumb question: Can you really change the pressure on your own machine? Thanks.

My S8 Elite is very quiet. Can hardly hear it on the nightstand.

Something must bw wrong with yours. Take it back and exchange it.

I have the same problem too with the resmed unit I have. I also bought a used unit on the cpap auction via cpap.com. This unit is Puritan Bennett's Goodnight 420e which is an auto cpap. I love this unit and can hardly tell its on. Sometimes I have to check for moving air and a light in the control unit to verify its actually running, its so quiet. Totally different than the Resmed unit. Also a lot cheaper too. I would seriously check this one out as well.

My first CPAP was a Resmed S8 Elite w/EPR and it was NOT noisy. I also self-purchased a Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage and did not find that noisy either. I was recently switched to the Resmed VPAP Auto bi-level and is is quiet.

The new Resmed S8 IIs are said to be even quieter and the new EasyBreathe technology is GREAT!

I'd take a guess you just have one of the occasional "odd balls" - or this rental unit was a used unit to begin with. But even so it is unusual for it to be noisy. I have some 3050 hours on my Elite and its still quiet.

My wife had a rental S8 for a month and it was very noisy. Far noisier (louder and higher pitched) than the S7. I suspected it was not right but since it was a rental we didn't investigate. Even with my ability to sleep through almost any non-pager noise I had to wedge a pillow between the bed and the nightstand to mute the noise.

Hi,

If your machine is leased don't buy it under any circumstances. Make them replace it. Remind them that it should have a two year warranty. I'd push for a replacement. My s8 is so quiet sometimes my hubby wonders if I turned it on.

I had a mask fitting once where they were using a machine that had a slight hum, She said "oh, they have us use the machines that are about to die, can you hear it hum?".
As far as changing your pressure that information is available here.

Go back to them with knowledge and see if they squirm. I'll bet they do.

Moana

Post by Arizona-Willie » Thu Jul 17, 2008 9:05 am

When I had my sleep study the lab had a unit that made a moaning sound with every breath.

I nicknamed it Moana.

Damned thing made it almost impossible to sleep.

My Resmed though is so quiet that at times I have opened my mouth to see if air came out in order to know if it was on. Usually happens if something wakes me up ( rare ).

If someones Resmed is making noise there is something wrong with it. They should return it.

I had the same problem with the Resmed Elite and it was because the vent cover on the ultra mirage nasal mask was not securely fastened. If you have this mask make sure it is clicked in place which can be rather tricky.
