Hi Slinky!Slinky wrote:If I were near a newstand looking for something to buy for reading and saw that New Yorker cover - I wouldn't have even the slightest interst in looking thru the magazine much less buying it.
It was discussed - pro and con - on one of the CNN shows I caught last nite. One of the commentators said it was satire, that the New Yorker appealed to the intelligent and educated and THEY would understand and appreciate the satire. So much for intelligence and education in this country!!!
The sad thing about it is that so many are going to be so "turned off" by this cover that the article debunking the "myths" portrayed on the cover won't be read! I know while I would like to read the article given the information another commentator talked about there is no way I would waste my money supporting a magazine showing such poor taste in choosing that cover.
And, yeah, a friend also sent me an e-mail yesterday supposedly a copy of the New York Time 29 June 2008 commentary by regular columnist Maureen Dowd. HOWEVER, when I went to the NYT website and looked up Dowd's 29 June 2008 column - it was an entirely different content!!! When I sent my friend that information, she got a bit uptight - she was just passing on what had been sent to her. WHY PASS SUCH DRIVEL ON? Its just SPAM clogging up the internet! Sheesh!
I usually trash such drivel as spam w/o reading it, including a lot of the jokes. I HATE being sent all those darn jokes and "thinking of you" spam. I enjoy an occasional good one, but 10 of them a day frome one "friend"?? Most of them have taken my requests to NOT send them well. But the friend who sent me yesterday's BS e-mail about Obama USUALLy is pretty level headed and not one to send a bunch of drivel like that.
I rarely find myself in such total agreement with so many different points in one post!
The spam of the "you've got a friend who really loves you, if you email this to five people including the one that sent it to you," or the good things will happen if you send this to all the people in your address book. What are they thinking?
And I too, would be hard pressed to buy the New Yorker with that cover, but here is a link to the July 21 Table of Contents : http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/toc/2 ... c_20080714
There are a couple of articles about Sen Obama, but I didn't note one that specifically addresses the slime sent around the internet tubes. But then, I only did a brief skim of them.
Now I have to go respond to the latest BS to hit my inbox about T Boone Pickens' new packaging of bad ideas. It never ends...
