classic tank problem

Post by Mile High Sleeper » Thu Jul 10, 2008 12:05 pm

I have a Respironics REMStar auto CPAP w/ CFlex, the "classic tank" model, 2 1/2 years old, a great machine. I love it. For the first time ever, I set it in auto PAP WITHOUT CFlex, using the smart card to change the setting. The machine turns itself off automatically whenever I move the hose, like when I'm turning over. Then it turns itself on again after a few breaths. It seems to happen when I'm maybe holding my breath to turn over, but also when I'm not holding my breath but the hose is moving. No hose leaks. This happens several times a night and disrupts my sleep. If there was an error code, I didn't notice it because I was trying to sleep.

Second problem: the EncorePro reports while I have no CFlex are 0.0 AHI. Can I believe this? My usual AHI is almost 3. And it only reports one day at a time, even though I don't erase the card.

So for now, I've gone back to CFlex, the machine stays on, and the EncorePro reports and AHI are normal again.

Does my machine have a broken sensor when it tries auto w/ no CFlex? Is that indicative of future breakdown when I use CFlex?

did the SmartCard come from another machine? Did you take the card to the doctor to have it read?

IF so, the card was never erased and set up for your machine, you CANNOT take a card from one machine and insert it into another, upon first insertion the machine writes its serial number to the memory on the card, then when you insert that card into another machine it cannot overwrite the data because the serial numbers don't match.

Try erasing the card and running setup on the card, this prepares the card for insertion into another machine.

as for the other rollover problem....

is the hose somewhat difficult to install on the machine?

Have you twisted the hose while inserting or removing it from the machine?

If so you may have twisted the hose port inside the machine housing, if you have the outlet on the left and try twisting on the hose you will see the top half of the iid separate from the bottom half as their is only 1 screw in the center on this end of the machine.

When that hose port housing gets twisted enough to separate the lid it breaks off the tiny hose barb on the inside. this hose barb is for the pressure sensor on the inside which regulates delivery pressure. Symptoms are: machine turns on runs a few seconds then turns off because it doesn't have that pressure feedback, it should be giving you a error 25 or 29.

You would have to remove the 3 #10 torx screws from the underside of the machine and carefully separate the top half from the machine, and if the barb is broken it will be inside the tiny clear tube that goes to the PCD pressure transducer.

If you have some SuperGlue and hot melt glue gun you can repair it. Try and remove the barb from the tiny hose (a brad nail from hanging pictures works), then find on the side of the main hose outlet the hole where the barb broke off, insert the brad nail into the barb and using SuperGlue glue it back on, when it is held in place with the SuperGlue use hot melt glue on each side of the barb and main housing to reinforce the repair. Connect the tiny clear hose back to the barb and put machine back together should work like new.

Be careful when attaching or removing the hose from the machine, that is how it gets broken, lid separates when twisted and hoses on inside don't have any slack so they break off the barb.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
