Mask leak solution (at least for me)

Post by formerobgyn » Wed Jul 09, 2008 2:09 pm

I have been using both the Quattro and the Ultra Mirage FF masks with leaks unsolved by silicone gel and various kinds of "straps" ( panty hose tops, head bands worn around the mask). By chance, about 10 days ago I discovered that if my neck and head were extended (thrown backwards), the masks did not leak. When I brought this up to both a sleep tech (4 sleep center visits) and the home health care apparatus people, the comment was "You have to wear it that way". No one told me. At any rate, it has provided a solution to me.

Maybe that's why they've worked for me.
I got into the habit of sleeping that way even before I was diagnosed and started therapy......in order to keep my airway more open.
I don't tilt my head backwards at an extreme angle......just a little so that my chin is as far away from my chest as is comfortable.

Somehow, I DOUBT that they're intended to be worn that way but whatever works for you........

Are you sure they didn't have "tongue-in-cheek" when they said that?

One of those memory foam contour pillows might aid you putting your head in the right position.

Just a thought,

I've seen the ChiroFlow pillows advertised. I seem to fall asleep on my back more often that before and try to keep my head and neck raised up also. After I fall asleep and then wake up I turn on my side til my arm goes to sleep and then back on my back!

Den, do you the quilted cover also? Is this water-base pillow really helpful?

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

No quilted cover. It works for me......but then I'm a pretty dedicated side sleeper. I suppose it would work for the supine position if you got the water level just right. For side sleeping, with the water level adjusted, it keeps the head and neck in alignment with the spine and my head doesn't sink into the pillow which keeps the mask from getting out of alignment during the night.
