Help us Design a Better CPAP Mask

Post by epdemw » Tue Jun 17, 2008 6:13 am

If you are a man between the ages of 25 - 65, living in the Boston area and you currently use either a traditional nasal or full face CPAP mask, our designers cordially invite you to participate in a 2.5 hour confidential interview to occur sometime between June 18 - June 27, 2008. We want to learn about your experiences with Sleep Apnea, and hear your thoughts on how CPAP masks can be improved. As a thank you for your participation we offer $200 USD for your time. This is your chance to help us help you. To learn more, and see if you are qualified for the study, please contact our research coordinator:

And we wonder why women have a hard time getting masks to fit?

As the baby boomers are aging, there will be more and more women diagnosed with OSA due to decreased muscular tonicity with menopause, weight gain, etc.Y'all just might think about asking a larger more representative sample of the OSA population about their experiences.

But alt least you are asking someone......

Right on, silver123!! You would HOPE that there is an awareness that women also get sleep apnea! As a 69 year old woman with sleep apnea, I wonder if some people have any idea what century we are living in!! Unfortuntely it is not only in the area of sleep apnea that women are not considered. It is, after all, 2008!! While there are health issues distinctive to men and women, there are so many more health issues that are common to both, and yet most studies are with men. The older I get the more I shake my head in disbelief!

I have been talking at 55 and over groups lately and a lot of these talks are at Nursing Homes and independent living centers. Most if not all of the poeple that come are women, but none of them think they have a problem with sleep apnea. All of them report their husbands have or had a problem. I think that wives are more prone to telling their husbands that they snore and stopp breathing. I am not sure if husbands don't want to insult their wives (or are less observant) by telling them that they snore. Also when women complain about the symptoms of sleep apnea they are told it is hormonal or that they are depressed. It is sad. This last year I have seen an increase in women being diagnosed. I hope it is not a fluke and because we are all better educated.

Apologies to everyone, the post should also have included women. So, if you are a man OR woman in the Boston/Providence/Worcester area we would love to speak with you about your CPAP.

Holy smokes!! is all those things you list what happens??

there may be an easier way, when I was lots younger my old roomate told me something that still rings true today, he said you want to know what she is going to look like when she gets older? Just look at her mother!!!

LOL, I had to meet every girls' mother I dated after that
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Desing a better mask

I guess it follows that, if we want to know what a man may look like when he gets older, we should look at his father!

My dad looked like an OX and a picture of health and suddenly dies of a heart attack at age 63

I am now 61 and look like a cow and have sleep apnea ( my dad snored too ) blood pressure and diabetes type two with high platelets. Hence the effort to stay alive having survived a brain stem stroke in 2000.

I am still smiling here down under

As I stated in another post, I emailed Resmed about how the Activa mask does not fit most women very well. I recieved a response saying they were in the process of working on a mask to fit the smaller faces of women and are getting ready to trial them soon.

They told me they have recieved many inquiries from women who need a smaller style mask and therefor they worked on one. Maybe all us gals should just keep aksing?

So there is HOPE!
