First Night Cpap feelin better

Post by sleepycomic » Fri Jun 13, 2008 9:15 am

Hey everyone. I got my cpap yesterday its a resmed elite. i got the swift nasal pillows. i took a nap with it as soon as i got home. i slept 8 hours last night. my girlfriend said she didnt hear any snoring. I feel different and better. not miraclously better just s bit. i looked at the eficacy data and heres the #s

HI 8.0
AI: 1.5
AHI: 9.5
Leak :0.4 l/s

are these #s good?
are these #s for a 24 hour period? wich will include my nap? or are they per HOur?

also does the EPR set at 3 have any effect on therapy?

Thank you for any answers ..Mike

Hi, sleepycomic, welcome to the forum and it sounds like you've had a good start.

The EPR setting is important...it insures that the air pressure goes down when you exhale so you're not breathing against the "wind." Not everyone seems to need this, some people get used to breathing out against the air while others have low pressures so it may not be as difficult. I, personally, wouldn't get a machine without this feature.

Re your stats. An AHI over 5 (it's per hour) is considered a bit high. Some people here say that the Resmed machines have an algorithm that results in much higher HI results than other machines so that may affect your results. On the other hand, you may be doing some mouth breathing. I find I need a chin strap to keep my mouth from opening...other people use tape...I'm sure someone will chime in here with more info.

sleepycomic,

Wearing the mask for 8 hours on the first night is darn good. As you get used to the machine over the next few days, the number hopefully will drop (they did in my case, anyway).

Your leak rate is at the the very high end (my opinion). Work on getting better seal.

As others have said, and AHI of 5 or less (or is it less than 5?) is considered "normal". But, again, it was my experience that after the first few days the AHI began to drop.

The ResMed machines use a 12 PM - 11:59 AM day. The numbers reported represent the average number of events per hour of machine use.

The EPR reduces the pressure on exhale (in your case, by 3 cm H2O). It is a comfort feature, so it enables people who have trouble exhaling against pressure to tolerate the therapy better. Other than that, I don't know of any other effects on therapy.

Good luck and stick with it.
