Now why do I picture the 1960's astronauts saying:

Hmmm, I was actually joking when I made my comments about astronauts & the olympics - then I found this comment which makes it the 4th & 5th & 6th Taikonauts targeted for Shenzou 7 in 2008. I should read my own ref'd links more closely
"Shenzhou 7 will be China's third manned space flight. It will carry three Taikonauts (Chinese Astronauts) on a five day space mission and one of them will carry out the nation's first spacewalk mission in 2008. It maybe launched after the Chinese Olympic Games in October 2008 on a Long March-2F (CZ-2F) launch vehicle from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center."

I knew they were in space as I was in China when the 1st Taikonaut went up. All China knew about it but it barely got a mention outside China - same in 2005 when the next 2 went up. I guess we were all sidelined by Dubbya & his antics in Iraq

Yep, I heard the Nasa men at JPL put a call into the local service rep and he went out and gave the ol' spacecraft a kick in the panel... all's well now!

He doesn't look like he's from India. Maybe he works even cheaper. Jim

Just couldn't resist resurrecting this thread based on my prediction back then & todays news re Taikonaut space walk. I have no idea if this type of news gets thru in today's US - if it does then my admiration of my US friends grows, if the story is squashed then that would be quite sad.
As much as I admire the hard working nature of the Chinese, they don't have the flair and gung-ho I am used to from the US. The Chinese have been very conservative and cautious re this taikonaut programme. But hats off to their achievement. Very well done.

Yup -- news got through.
They landed this morning -- went off on Thursday and landed on Sunday -- wonder why the mission was so short.
The Spacewalk was also less than 20 min. -- They are taking things very cautiously -- as they should, but......
It'd be interesting to be a fly on the wall in their space center......have to applaud anyone sitting on top of a "bomb" and launching into space.....It's certainly a ride I would take in 2 shakes of a heartbeat......just tell me which seat to strap in to!!!!!
Both "wives" (no. not at the same time!!! ) consider me a bit crazy......
Just adventurous!!!
cheers

Wars arise from a failure to understand one another's humanness. Instead of summit meetings, why not have families meet for a picnic and get to know each other while the children play together?

Goose, I suspect you are trying to get a couple of nights without cpap.

Sleeping Soundly in Space
Two studies performed on astronauts indicate that sleeping in the absence of gravity reduces certain sleep-disturbing conditions common on Earth. In the studies, astronauts in orbit stopped snoring and experienced fewer occurrences of disruptive breathing patterns such as apnea, a condition where sleep is interrupted by a termination of breathing; and hypopnea, a condition where normal breathing is reduced, producing long, shallow breaths. These conditions effect millions of people in America alone. Thes studies are the first proof that gravity does indeed play a role in these conditions. However, even though snoring, apnea, and hypopnea are alleviated, other factors in space can make sleep difficult for astronauts. Understanding the effects of space on humans is an important focus of astrobiology, and is of great importance to future missions, which may require astronauts to remain in microgravity for extensive periods of time. The recent studies may also lead to technologies that benefit the millions of people who toss and turn through the night here on Earth.

I'm with you, Goose, and I don't even have any ex-wives to think I'm crazy (just the crazy horrible ex) (his diagnosis is paranoid personality disorder with psychotic features)
Hey, some people might think _we_ are diagnosible for our preferences! No paranoia though.

I worry about the blast off and all those Gs. It seems they are in prone positions face up. Perfect for cramming my tongue and soft palate together in the back of my throat and creating a long "awake apnea"?

Can you picture it - CPAP therapy in 50 years time...
Cpap cure holiday in Space. Spend a year in space cpap free, enjoy breathing freely.
Perhaps a precondition of being an astronaut should be that you have OSA

Maybe it is. Rested Gal posted a link recently and if I remember correctly five out of ten of the astronauts in the link appeared to have OSA.
