Ulra Mirage vs Mirage Quatro

Post by pes423 » Wed May 14, 2008 12:04 pm

I have been using the Ultra Mirage full face for a while now. My pressure is 14 so it does leak around the eyes a bit and that is rough while sleeping in contacts, use a lot of rewetting juice!! But the Ultra Mirage has been the best mask for me, tried a lot of others and they are in the pile now!! I have a close-cropped beard and that doesn't seem to be an issue at all with teh Ultra either. Have been seeing a lot about the new Quatro and was thinking of getting it next. Anyone made the switch from Ultra to Quatro and what do you think? Is it better, or woudl you go back to the Ultra?? Thanks!!!

Funny thing pes423 - I've been wondering about the exact opposite. I'm using a Quattro at pressure of 16, and find it to be a little painful on the bridge of my nose. Using a moleskin patch every night now and it helps, but I've heard a lot of good things about the UMFF and wanted to find out more about it. Like you I also tend to like to carry a very close beard.

Pes423-
I've been using the UMFF for about two years now. I have a close trimmed goatee and titrated at a pressure of 16. I too have occaisional issues with leaks around the nose into the eyes with the UM. At my most recent mask trial I gave the Quattro a shot as it was touted as a newer improved UM. The biggest difference is the support at the forehead which is now controlled by a dial rather rather than a notch system. Due to the shape of my face and the need to seal around the sides of my nose I have the UM at the most verticle setting. I found I could not adjust the Quattro as far verticle and had continuous leaking into the eyes. Of course everyone is different so it may work well for you. The dial seems much stronger (a big plus) and the mask was quieter than my Utra Mirage.
Hope this helps.....
Stephen

I keep breaking my Ultra Mirage at teh forehead support!!! If the Quatro has a stronger knob, that might make it better for me. Thanks!!!!

Isn't there an alternate mask seal (grommet?) that is available for the Quattro that is supposed to account for a slightly different facial profile?

Ultra Mirage vs. Mirage Quatro

I have both and they are both bridge of the nose killers. I don't find any real difference in them except the method of adjusting the mask angle.

I'm a UMFF user, got the Quattro awhile back, used it for a few weeks, then went back to my UM--the UM is just more comfortable for me, doesn't make the bridge of my nose sore like the Quattro does.

The Ultra Mirage was my first mask and it was with reluctance that I tried a Quattro. The Quattro fits my face better and stays sealed during my side to side travels. This is such a individual thing with so many different face shapes. I say watch for one on the CPAP auction and give it a try. They are very popular and if a Q is not a good fit list it as worn one night and you should recover most of your funds. If, it does work better as it did for many of us sell you Ultra

pes423:

I was going to get the UMFF next mo. when I went to the VA. I have the Quattro (Med.) and would trade w/you if you have the Med. or L. The Quattro has less than 40 hrs. of sleep on it and I don't smoke or have pets...well a wife and granddaughter, they don't pay much attention to the cpap. Can stop the leaks for awhile but when it starts leaking sleep is not possible.

Let me know if interested, no smoking no pets would be preferred.

I switched from a UMFF to Quattro last fall. It takes a little more getting used to, the Q seems to be more susceptible to getting dislodged by the pillow. The part that made a big difference for me, though, is the Q cushion is designed with a wider flap on the chin, so when I drop my chin and mouth-breathe (e.g. when congested) the seal stays intact.

From time to time I put my UMFF back on - the sizing of the Q seems to be too coarse (I'm too large for the small size, too small for the medium). Mostly though the Q has been working out for me.

BTW if you try the Q be sure to pick up some good quality plumber's teflon tape for the elbow - Resmed hasn't figured out yet how to get the redesigned joint to quit leaking.
