questions for the experienced cpap users

Post by anniep » Fri Apr 25, 2008 10:38 am

My sleep study showed I have severe sleep apnea. I was given a pressure of 14 and put on a cpap machine. I have been using my cpap now for 6 weeks. I took the advice of the kind people on this message board. I went back and got fitted for a different mask, which worked much better; and put the machine on the floor which really worked to prevent the rainout.

The first two weeks on cpap I felt like a new woman, I had lots of energy, I no longer had to go to bed at 8 pm and I didn' need to have 3 hour naps on my days off. But the best thing was that all the body aches seemed to go away. But now I am aching again? Could it be that lately when I wake up at 4:30 to go to the bathroom, I sometimes don't put my mask back on for the 1 1/2 additional hours I stay in bed?

Next question:
Do I really have to use distilled water? (I'm going on a cruise and don't want to have to deal with the water issue.)

This message board has been a life saver. I am learning lots from other peoples experience. Thanks to all of you.

1. You think, If you don't use it all the time you sleep, you loose.

2. You don't have to use distilled water, it keeps your HH cleaner and deposit free (Almost). You can clean it when you get home, but I don't and I never take mine apart, I don't like leaks. Jim

#1 Yes even if you nap you should wear your mask.
#2 Regular water for a week isnt a huge problem.
#5 I found that I felt wonderful after a few weeks and then wham I started getting aches and pains, but that was more because I was sleeping SO well and not tossing and turning, my body wasn't used to being in one position for so long... this too shall pass.

Most importantly, have a great cruise!

We took a whole small suitcase full of Walmart bottled water on the last cruise we went on (Me, my wife, 3 kids) because we like to drink water, and shipboard water can be less than wonderful. I took two empties and filled them with distilled water marking them with an "X" on the cap with a sharpie. These were packed along with the ones for drinking.

That's a good idea, now I just have to pack light enough to keep the water from making my luggage over weight.
