How do you Install Encore Viewer and Card Reader Under Vista

Post by Hose_Head » Tue Apr 22, 2008 7:04 pm

There's been several threads related to this subject, but I've yet to see an answer to the question: how do you install encore viewer and the card reader when Vista is your operating system?

It seems that there's no driver for the card reader for windows.

The answer to this oft-asked question should be posted to the Collective Wisdom page!
I'm workin' on it.

Hi I am running Encore Viewer on vista with no problems. I pluged the card reader in first then installed Encore Viewer the correct driver installs from the Encore Viewer disk, Do Not Use the disk that came with the card reader.

Ok. To follow up on my own post, I finally got it working.

For those who are interested, the CPAP.com web site specifically states that "This product is only the SmartCard Reader. EncoreViewer 1.0 is required to download and analyze data from the SmartCard. The picture shows driver software for the reader. This driver software is no longer shipped with the readers since the drivers are included with the EncoreViewer 1.0 software. When you purchase this item you will receive only the card reader."

When you install the encoreviewer software, it pops up with a message to instruct you to ignore the error messages that windows Vista produces. During the installation process, I had been simply closing these error-message-windows. The correct method was to select the option to "... install the driver, anyway ..." When I reinstalled encoreviewer in this fashion, it correctly installed.

Once encoreviewer was installed, I plugged in the USB cable, with the smartcard in the reader, and all was copacetic!

I really wish Mako (manufacturer of the card reader) and Respironics would get together and fix this issue so that the setup routine will run without error messages and need for a knowledgeable user.

I'm workin' on it.

I too am running vista and have had no luck installing the Encore.. Well, not quite true. I had it all running just fine until the next day when the drivers were lost in no where computer land. Now, I cannot even uninstall because somewhere it lost part of that feature. I am now going to have to re-format entire computer.. as the restore feature won't even get rid of it. I have been messing around this for a month now...SOOOOO.... I am happy at least one of us got it right!

Hate to bring this up, but do you still have your old XP operating system? If there is a reason to move to Vista, I have not found it yet.

Nope, I bought my laptop with Vista already installed. No choice for me. I am not defeated yet though. I WILL get it right.

Well it has never installed properly for me. When installing Encore Viewer, it tells me to ignore the error messages, but there never are any error messages. The drivers never get installed. So I'm using my work laptop to see my results.

As far as why I'm using Vista 64bit, it works perfectly with all my other hardware and software and has better performance on some computer games I play. But we don't need to change topics and talk about the merits of operating systems.

To uninstall encore viewer, if that's what you're trying to do, in VISTA, do the following:

startup > control panel > Programs and features > encore viewer > select uninstall from top menu.

Encore drivers are there too.

My understanding is that much of the hardware in modern notebook computers that are running vista are dependent on vista. If you uninstall vista, you cannot go back to XP because the hard drive, etc, won't work. We're stuck with vista.

Like others here, I cludged my way into getting it working, so I'm not certain of the correct sequence. However, I suspect that you will find success by installing using the following sequence (thanks to a previous poster in another thread).

Vista only: (assumes you first have uninstalled both the encore viewer software and the smartcardreader drivers)
1) plug in the smartcard first. do NOT follow the directions on it that say to install the included software first. those drivers are for XP and won't work with vista.
2) windows will acknowledge the new hardware and will prompt you to look for the drivers. Leave this window open and go to next step.
3) install encore viewer software. This software includes the windows vista drivers that you need. Once installation is complete, go back to the open window that you left in step 2, above.
4) an earlier poster said that the pop up window for the drivers disappeared. In my installation it did not. Instruct it to look for drivers on your computer for all paths and subdirectories of c:\. If you see any windows that indicate there is an error, select the vista option to continue with the installation, anyway.
5) the installation should now run to completion.
6) put the smart card into the card reader. if it does not show a green light, I suggest a) try unplugging and then replugging your smart card, or b) reboot your computer (that's what I had to do.)

If it still doesn't work, I'm at a loss at this point. Others may be able to help.

I'm workin' on it.

I did try the uninstall in the control panel and get an error saying the file that it needs to use is missing and won't uninstall. Maybe I will give it another try your way and hopefully the whole program will install correctly after the card reader is in.

Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction. Just hope it works and I don't have to do the re-format I was planning on.
