I don't think you can turn off AutoStart on Respironcs machines either.

It is a safety feature.

I've found that when using the Autostart on the M-series it works fine when I'm hooked up to my Optilife Nasal mask. However when using my Ultra Mirage II I have to work at it and usually press the button. I also have good results withn I use my Mirage Swift mask. The flow sensor sensitivity isn't adjusted quite right to compensate for a full face mask. It would be nice if there was a calibration setting we could access to fix this issue.

And yes, the autostart can be turned off on Respironics M-Series if it's too much of an annoyance.

You obviously haven't looked at the setup parameters in your machine, lately.

Wabmorgan was right.....it's a SAFETY feature.

You can turn off the "Auto OFF" feature (which SHOULD be turned off).

As far as my personal experiences go with a couple of masks......the Quattro doesn't take much breathing to get the machine started......in fact, I have to be careful with my breathing to make sure it starts when I WANT it to.
The UMFF, on the other hand can take some extra effort to start the machine (a few extra puffs in the mask).

Wastes money, wears out machine?

Post by Capri » Sat Apr 19, 2008 12:06 pm

In order for Auto-Start to work, my S8 Elite seems to be running at a very low rate, anticipating my breathing to turn on. To me, that seems like a total waste of energy and would wear out the machine prematurely. I can just as easily press the ON button rather than have it idle for 15 hours awaiting my first breath.

I can't say about the Resmed S8.... since I've never had one.... but the Respironics machines are just setting there.... they don't run at all till they either turn on with the AutoStart feature or you hit the button to turn it on.

I don't understand WHY the Resmed would be any differant in that reguard????

From what I've gathered from reading posts on this subject, if the ResMed machine's mask setting is set to the full face (Mirage Full) setting, it disables the auto-on feature. I guess you gotta consider the source on this one.....ResMed.

Mask setting

I think that's correct about Auto-start and the mask setting. But Auto-start still seems like a waste of energy to me. I just checked my machine on the Auto-start setting. It does indeed generate a very soft stream of air in order to detect if a mask has been put on. I am not familiar with any other brand. I guess I'm just concerned about burning extra energy and running my machine 24/7, even if only at a super low speed.

I have gone through 5 masks in order to find one that fits and keeps my AHI under 10. That's been very frustrating - and talk about a waste of my money! But all is well now. Cheers! Capri

SAFETY feature? Snort. They can shove AutoStart where the sun don't shine! AGGRAVATING feature is a more accurate description. I'm a big girl now, I actually know how to push the On button!!

I just had my machine in for a pressure check. I have the same problem with auto start. Sometimes it starts when I get the mask strapped on, sometimes I have to huff and puff to get it started. I was doing the huffing and puffing to make sure it was working. Now that I know it works, I just turn on the start button if it doesn't start right away. I also use the optilife mask. When I was using a FFM, it started when I got within an inch of the mask.

I have tried the one suggestion posted here and put my finger across the exhalation holes and when breathing and that starts it up right away.

Once the tank started when shaking the water from my mask!
