According to Dr. Amen, who is a leading scientist on the study of the brain and use of SPECT imaging, indicated today on local PBS station that untreated sleep apnea DOUBLES your risk of having Alzheimer's and dementia in later life.

You are both correct, I still however will hope to get this down, if it does not go down then I still have my Cpap. I think I can live with that. I don't know if I will ever get down to a natural under 5 AHI per hour but I will give it a shot. I got some weight to lose. I put over 3 miles on the treadmill today. We will see.

The other option is a "fatal" awareness that you didn't.

Reed, I think my situation is similar to yours. My sleep study showed my apnea to be moderate, and my O2 sat never went below 90%.

I did not feel overly sleepy during the day. I had no overt symptoms other than I snored like a freight train.

Here's what my CPAP adventure has been like:

Within a few days of starting CPAP, I was much less "foggy" in the mornings. Waking up became an "event" as opposed to a 10 minute "process".

The mornings were better, but the evenings were worse - I'd start getting sleepy about 6:00PM and would start nodding off on the couch. The evening sleepyness went away after a couple of months.

My short term memory has vastly improved. It used to be that if my wife or kids called and asked my to pick something up on the way home from work, I'd have to write it down immediately. Now, I can easily remember.

In short, it seemed to take my body a while to adjust to normal sleep patterns, but once it did, I do feel better and have a better memory.

Den and Ken,

I hear you both. I hear nothing but great things of the cpap. I will give the CPAP a great chance to succeed. I want to get back to 8 hours sleep. I want to do one more marathon. I feel that once I get this squared away that I will be successful at other things.
