A couple of websites that I have found useful are:
<http://www.air-purifier-power.com/>
<http://www.allergybuyersclub.com/>

You want to be sure that it has a HEPA filter. Those without it are not very effective.

Consumer Reports has a running legal battle with that brand (can't think of it) that is just an electrostatic air cleaner. CR says it is not effective. Besides, it creates ozone when running.

I like the kind that also has a UV light that kills mold, etc. but they're hard to find.

Take a look at the IQAir line. Bought mine last year and love it.

BlueAir, built like a tank, silent, does the job:

They can send you replacement filters at regular intervals.

This is what I'm using.

In the long run it was much cheaper than the smaller hepa filters. I've had it for 2yrs now with no problems.

Check out the BlueAir 402 refurbished, mine was refurbished and I saved about $80, it looked brand new is made entirely of steel, has a simple high quality squirrel cage fan and simple knob on the front for speed control. It is fairly large but you need it large in order to filter the air properly, the 402's filter is about 3-1/2" thick of pleated filter media and filters down to .01 micron. They also have a charcoal filter if you are trying to eliminate smoke, if you don't smoke you don't need the more expensive filter.

Filter should be changed about every 6 months, but you can vacuum them and extend that time. Replacement filter is about $60 bucks, so it costs about $120 per year.

Even the refurbished units are warranted for 10 years. Warranty is only as good as the company that stands behind it (look at Sharper Image, if you own one of theirs you are out of luck with your warranty).

BlueAir has been around a long long time, I wouldn't waste my time on those germicidal or ionic types.
