Does my Resmed shut itself off if mask removed?

Post by EricBoston » Tue Apr 01, 2008 7:41 pm

Last night I woke up in the middle of the night with my mask lying on the pillow next to me, and my machine switched off -- with my having no memory of doing either! (Just finished my first week, and thanks to this forum I know this isn't uncommon).

But it seems unlikely I'd unconsciously reach over to turn off the machine but leave the mask nearby, so I'm curious, does the machine switch off after a while if the mask is removed? It's a Resmed S8 Autoset Vantage, and it's not set on AutoStart.

Just want to know exactly how crazy my subconscious mind is

Hi Eric, Sorry I don't have the same machine so I can't answer your question, but I noticed that you have Boston in your name so I'm assuming you live in the Boston area. If you do, do you know a good DME in the area?

Boston DME

Hi Jomac,

Yes I'm in Boston, but I'm a newbie (just over 1 week) and don't have enough experience with my DME to really evaluate them. I liked the guy who came out to the house to deliver the equipment, anyway. He seemed very knowledgeable about the machine and had good tips for taking care of it. For what it's worth they are: Reliable Respiratory in Norwood, http://www.reliablerespiratory.com. But again, I haven't even tried a mask exchange yet, so it's not much of an evaluation.

First, if you will fill in your profile with the equipment that you use, it will make it easier for us to help you with your questions!

Second, most (I think all? not sure on that) ResMed machines have a feature that will automatically turn the machine on and off. It is accessed in the Clinical menu. 'On' when you breathe into the mask once or twice, 'off' when the machine no longer detects any back pressure for 10-15 seconds, i.e. free flowing air, unimpeded by any restriction. Your machine must have that turned on (it it optional and can be turned off). Removing your mask would trigger the machine to shut itself off. Putting it back on and breathing once or twice would turn it back on, just as if you had used the On/Off button on the machine itself.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the reply and welcome, Bookbear. I did actually mention my machine in the body of my post, but you are quite right that it's much easier to find if I include it in my profile/signature, which I've now done.

I did check for that setting, and it's not turned on. Perhaps I really did turn off the machine in my sleep. I will have to have a little talk with my subconscious mind about how this is a joint project here -- no sabotage allowed!

My resmed vantage will turn itself off if I take off the nasal pillows, but so far it hasn't turned off when I took off the full mask. Auto on/off is NOT on. I think it must have something to do with a completely unobstructed leak detection.

I find it a convenient way to turn it off in the morning as it is not always an easy reach. Gotta figure out how to make it do that with the mask!
