Mattress for side sleeping

Post by roster » Sat Mar 15, 2008 5:53 am

My wife just told me to pick out a new mattress. She is giving my mattress to our graduate son for his new apartment.

What do you recommend for someone who must sleep on his side?

Thanks.

One shaped in a U...so when you slide in you can't move from side to side.

Seriously...no pillow top or anything soft that will absorb whatever it is that you put on your back to stay on your side.

I set up the bed with pillows the other night so I was about at a 30 degree angle. I slept on my back and had almost no apnea events.....so sleeping on the back is ok if you get upright enough...maybe one of those electric beds like hospitals have.

I think Memory foam is the best for side sleeping.

To me the best way, and least expensive - is to get one of those memory foam toppers to throw right on top of the old mattress. They come in different thicknesses - Measure so you dont make it tooo high.

You can get toppers at most Dept. stores for a substantial savings over buying a new mattress. The nice thing is if it turns out YOU don't like the memory foam - you can go back to your old mattress the next day w/o any troubles. But I think - given time you will like it.

If YOU can find a new mattress for under $1k you are doing something.

oh send me the saving

Good Luck,

I believe there are different grades of memory foam. The less dense are cheaper and are not supportive in my opinion.

We've had a tempur-pedic for about 5 years. It is the most comfortable mattress we've ever slept on. Can hardly tolerate any other mattress now when we travel. Love it!!!

Aye -- Tempurpedic is the one ... the only one.

We've had ours for a couple of years now and we love it.

Can't beat the Tempurpedics ... the old saying " you get what you pay for " is so so true.

Don't let a salesman talk you into anything else. They claim " like a Tempurpedic " ... " just the same as ... only cheaper " etc etc etc. and they lie like a politician.

I side sleep almost exclusively and the Tempurpedics are great.

Any position is fine on a Tempurpedic really I believe.

Buy the best and only cry once.

I have read up on beds in consumer reports and talked to many people on other websites about beds....and it's the same story..... Some people love the tempurpedics and some people hate them. I know people that money is no object yet they have taken their Tempurpedics back to the store and purchased something else. On the other hand obviously Arizona Willie loves his. Different strokes for different folks. The best policy is to try them out in the store.....take 20 minutes and lay on them.......don't take someone elses word.

Hmmm yes - mattresses are a bit like CPAP masks - comfort is definitely a very personal thing. I have a tempurpedic for my main bed but have a sleep number fancy version (built-in layer of memory foam and built in layer of another type of foam over top of the air chamber). I like both and have been known to wander between them when unable to sleep. Until I have a backup CPAP machine though, my wanderings have been cut short since starting cpap. I can't quite stumble upstairs without really waking up if I have to remember all of my equipment (without leaking water from tank into my M-series!

Hi,
Just my 2 cents here, I tried the tempurpedic and it gets hot, so I returned mine and got a solid latex mattress, a bit more expensive but it does not get hot!!!

Good luck. At least you don't need to get it from a DME

My wife and I have been putting off buying a new mattress for our bed. The one we have is only 10 years old, was fairly expensive to buy, and is so horribly collapsed in the middle I have taken to sleeping in the guest bedroom (without her :-( ).

Our mattress buying experience was pretty bad - the manufacturers go to such great lengths to prevent any sort of price shopping or any real comparisons (e.g. using different patterns on the outer fabric and calling it a different model). For the mattress we bought, the construction was so shoddy it just sinks when you sit on it - however without sitting on it it looks almost flat, and the metric the warranty reps use to judge "worn out" is a pretty high bar (in our case it has to have a minimum 1.5" sag when nothing is placed on it - never mind it drops 4 inches in the middle when you lie on it). The store also did a bait-n-switch, advertising it as frame-included, the display in the store showed a pretty sturdy frame but what was delivered looked like bent tin (of course that one was the model number on the invoice, not the one in the store).

So while we badly need a new mattress, we have been very reluctant to go through that again.

Hey, it's your money - the mattress toppers I have been on are just like the Tempurpedics for 1/5 the price and like i said if you do not like it you can roll it up & use it for a guest bed when Willie comes over, ha.

And don't let anyone fool you - I laid on many beds when shopping - 20 minutes is NOTHING like sleeping ALL nite on the mattress.

And for the record, having had a Select Comfort for over ten years - as the CPAP saying goes - anything w/Comfort in the name is NOT.

The most comfortable mattress I tried while shopping was made by Kingsdown - I said the same thing - never heard of them. Just way too over price for me - but if money is NO object - Kingsdown felt comfy to Gumby.

ps. Happy Hunting

I went to visit one of our clients (I am an internet marketer), they own a high end bedroom furniture store. THe website is pmbedroomgallery.com the furniture is beautiful, but what blew me away were the mattresses they make. I have a tempurpedic and I was kicking myself when I saw these. THe prices seem to range but they have one called the "Dream Catcher" bed that made me salivate..

Anyway, check out the site. http://www.pmbedroomgallery.com/mattresses/index.cfm
and

Its two brothers and they make most incredible stuff, unfortunately it comes with a price tag.

If you contact them, tell them Benjamin from Starkmedia told you about it, the customer service is the best.

I dont know if its on the site but they even have a 9ft wide bed, it was designed for one of the milwaukee bucks. I could live on it.

My husband and I just purchased a Lady Americana Elite Nobility a week ago. I am a side sleeper and he sleeps on his back with his head turned to the side. We have both slept well every night since we got it. It is wonderful!!!

Mattress preference

Post by kteague » Sat Mar 15, 2008 10:03 pm

I had no complaints about my old mattress nor was I looking to replace it - I thought hurting at nite was just something to be endured. I happened to run across a new Tempur-Pedic topper for $15 (apparently someone didn't like it), and put it on my bed. It appears to be 1.5 to 2 inches thick. For years I'd had to grab the headboard and pull to help myself turn over because my back and hips hurt so bad, not to mention having a frozen shoulder that I had to pry out of position with the other hand. My back and hips and shoulder still hurt, but not when I'm in bed. I saw a difference the first night, an unbelievable difference within days. I just may be able to eek another 10 years out of my mother's old mattress. Oh, I'm a side sleeper.

I never even considered a tempurpedic as the material appeared to me that it would be hot to sleep on.

It is funny to see Arizona-Willie say he likes it and he is in the neighborhood.

Kind of hard to "trial" a bed though.
