Hello fellow CPAP-ERS,

My insurance just denied it today and the prices at CPAP.COM are outrageous.

Keep in mind that Resmed's minimum pricing policy applies to ADVERTISED prices. Try negotiating w/the various online DME suppliers who advertise the Resmed ResScan software and cable reader.

Thank you for the advice! I will try and negotiate but I think its a real racket selling unneccesary card readers. My old resmed unit worked just fine without one. Resmed's idea that people are sending all these data cards into their physicians is a joke. I have seen all the best sleep docs in LA and not one of them provides the service of reading data cards for feedback. IMHO Resmed should really stop nickel and diming their customer. They are too good a company for that. At least make the prices reasonable. $70 for a $5 card reader ? You got to be kidding me ? $150-200 for s/w ? They must be taking notes from Microsoft.
Well, Resmed's REAL customers are the local brick & mortar DME suppliers and the locals are crying real loud about the lower prices that were being advertised by the online DME suppliers - so ...... they're just supporting the biggest segment of their customers. Scuttlebutt is that Respironics and Fisher & Paykel have indicated their intent to do the same and set minimum pricing policies as well. I ASSUME they also mean minimum ADVERTISED prices but that I can't swear to whereas Resmed has clearly stated minimum ADVERTISED pricing.

I used the card reader here -- http://securetech-corp.com/acr38.html
The disadvantage is that it doesn't have the form factor for the resmed data card. A work around can be seen here -- http://img248.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img47232ou.jpg
I just used a fine marker and drew the lines on the reader around my card. Sometimes it took a time or two to get it just right, but eventually I was able to get in in correctly the first time almost every time.

ResMed & ResScan
The complete Resmed/ResScan system for me has been very helpful and terribly interesting. It is NOT cheap, not as easy to buy as it used to be and so far as I know, not covered by insurance. But I got it and use it almost daily. While I don't know if one system is much better than another, I would recommend that if your xPAP system supports data upload/download that you go for it!

The best market price anyone has found so far for a suitable smartcard reader is about $30+ shipping, on a one off retail basis.chrking1 wrote:$70 for a $5 card reader ?
If you can find one to sell for $5 in one off retail quantities you'll make a killing.
So, since its so easy, you will also no doubt be able to get a suitable piece of software written and onto the market for, say, $30 retail (that's a common shareware price).chrking1 wrote:You got to be kidding me ? $150-200 for s/w ?
On the other hand it might just be a tad trickier than you seem to be assuming to create and market.....
Especially when there is a limited market, eh, Bill?
One does have to wonder tho, how difficult it would be to remove the ability to set the therapy settings in the software and thus enlarge the market and demand for the software.
