Humidifier Help Please!!!

Post by kristyandjamey » Sat Mar 08, 2008 12:09 am

Hello Everybody!
My Hubby had been diagnosed with SA about a year ago. He has been severely congested for the past few months and we finally saw the doc about it and he was told to get a humidifier. However he is worried that the heated ones wont allow him to sleep. He hates anything that has to do with heat. If it were up to him we would live in Alaska in a tent with no heat. Anyway, My question is does anybody know of a humidifier that has a very low heat setting or even one that will go from no heat at all to then having heat if we want it? His poor little nose hurts so bad from being so dry. I dont know what else to do to help him. Also we no longer have insurance to pay for the humidifier so we have to outright buy it on our own which means we are unable to try them out before we buy. Does anybody know of any companies that allow you to rent them before you buy them? Thanks so much for all the advice that you can give! Any little bit would help!!

All of them that I know allows you to run them with the heat turned off as a passover humidifier. With the heat on you still won't notice the heat. The F&P 150 in my opinion is more adjustable than most and will fit any machine.

I agree with 6PtStar's suggestion about getting a Fisher & Paykel HC 150 heated humidifier. Can be used with any brand/model machine.

As with any heated humidifier, the heat doesn't have to be turned on if you'd rather use it just as a passover humidifier. Air passing over non-heated water won't pick up much moisture for humidification, but the little bit it gathers with the heat turned off might be all that's needed for some people.

And when you do want heated humidification, the F&P HC 150 works great.

I use an F&P as well--it certainly provides the most heat and humidified air, more than any of the integrated HH systems. But, for passive (no heat) humidification, I discovered that the HH systems really don't provide enough water surface area to really generate very much moisture. So, I purchased the LX Oasis Passive Humidifier from cpap.com. It's designed with multiple channels through which the air is forced over more water surface than with any of the heated humidifier models. For cool, passive humidified air, it's the "heat." Good luck!

You didn't mention what machine your husband has (or where you live), but in the very beginning of my therapy, three years ago, I tried the heated humidifier for one or two nights and didn't like it......so, I turned it off and haven't used it (in heated mode) since. I just use it in "pass-over" mode and the cool air keeps my nasal passages open. The relative humidity in Wyoming is VERY low, so the air pasing over the water DOES pick up some moisture. I also try to make sure my nasal passages are pretty clear before I head for bed.

im the exact way as your husband. i hate breathing hot air. have him try this. on my cpap it has a humidifier DISTILLED WATER ONLY!!! and i fill it up but dont turn the heater on. using it without the heater will give him minimal humidity. try that for about 1 month then go to using the heat every 3rd night for about a month then evry other night for a month then he will be able to go nightly. i work for LINCARE as a service rep and have tried this same method with several patients all of whom use the humidifier nightly now and cant ever go back

and again please take it from a person in the business.....DISTILLED WATER ONLY

I believe my humidifier is heated, it has a heat pad, but I cant ever seem to get it to fill my mask with water, it may actually be broken, it does make a difference however. I managed to avoid two nasty colds and a flu that got everyone including my live in girlfriend and I think it has to do with the moisture from the humidifier. I dont notice any heat and I am very sensitive to heat.
