Melatonin

Post by trice54 » Sat Mar 01, 2008 8:08 pm

What dosage of Melatonin do those of you who use it take? I bought some the other day and have taken the directed dose of one 5mg tab at bedtime with no good results..still taking me forever to fall asleep and waking often.
Thanks...Trice

I started taking Melatonin a few months ago, also 5 mg. It's not like a sedative at all, not that powerful, but I do think it helps me get to sleep more quickly and sleep more soundly.

I started taking Melatonin quite some time ago. I take a 3mg tab. about 20 minutes before I go to bed. It does not make you sleepy, just really relaxed and better able to go to sleep. My problem was staying asleep. I do still have problems from time to time staying asleep, but not half as bad as when I dont take the melatonin. I really like it.

I take 3 mg, right after dinner.

Melatonin is normally produced by your body to tell you it's getting to that time that you need to rest. Typically, it's production increases at or near sundown. I used to take 3 mg just before I went to bed but my Dr said I need to take it at my evening meal to give it time to work. I've had much better results taking it around 6:30pm.

Thanks for that last tip! I've been taking at at bedtime, too (3mg), and while I fall asleep okay, been having some random sleeplessness lately. I'll try taking it earlier in the night.

Cheers,
Babs

I agree with taking Melatonin early in the evening. By the time ten oclock rolls around, you will be looking forward to sleeping. It's not like Ambien which can be taken just before you go to bed.

I've found the timed release melatonin to be helpful for staying asleep. I still wake up during the night, but I find myself going back to sleep a lot faster.

Thanks for all the info..I will try taking the Melatonin earlier in the evening. I haven;t seen the timed release form, but that sounds like what I could use.

I was gonna say the exact same thing Trice, you beat me to it... I never thought of taking it earlier. But I will now. And...will look for the time release form.
