Didn't sleep all night with CPAP last night!!
Everytime I feel asleep I woke because I was swallowing and the mask intensifies the sound and I am a light sleeper. Also between waking up every few minutes from that I woke up a few time from making a snort/snore noise because it sounds so loud with my mask on. I upped the pressure from 13 to 15, but still swallowing and snort/snore noise. I tried to sleep without the mask because I was desperet. I couldn't sleep without the mask either. This happened at the beginning and I changed from a nasal mask to a FFM and then had the pressure upped to 11. I upped it to 13 myself. I am so tired, anxious, and frustrated. I sleep fine the night before, what could have changed? Also does gaining weight have anything to do with needing to up the pressure? I feel like I am going nuts. I could care less if I snort/snore or swallow a tiny bit if I wasn't such a light sleeper.

I, for one, don't know what kind of an answer you're looking for.deepurpleprincess wrote:Everytime I feel asleep I woke because I was swallowing and the mask intensifies the sound and I am a light sleeper. We all have occasional nights when we sleep lousy, toss and turn, have colds, are stuffed up, etc., etc., etc.
From your post, it sounds like this was just last night and hadn't happened since you started. It could be the increase in the pressure.....I don't know what to tell you.
I was going to ask if you had a data-capable machine and had reports to look at, but I went back and checked......you've got the "Plus".
It sounds like you're "grabbing at straws"......you need to think this through, logically......ask yourself "What's causing this?".

I can say from first-hand experience, that stress and having too many things going on in one's mind can keep a person from sleeping well.
Try to get your mind "clear" before going to bed. Maybe the machine pressure needs to come back down a bit, if that's what was keeping you awake.
Good luck.

Welcome deepurpleprincess. it looks like u have a machine like mine. did you're RT set a range for your machine ? u need to know, like Den said without a card & software to chart your data ,u are at the discretion of the RT. my pressure is auto 5-15.u can crank that thing up too far and make it uncomfortable to drift off. i haven't used th ramp feature now for several weeks, however i do have the c-flex set on 3 and the humidifier on 2. sometimes more, sometimes less. it may take u awhile to tweak things. i have been going through a broncial infection this past week,so have been switching masks to try and get better #'s. (hang in there ZzzzzzzzzzzzI WANT MY LUNGS BACK !!

Hi Princess, Welcome,
There is one thing you might consider to help you sleep a little better. That is Melatonin.
I was never a light sleeper until I started cpap therapy. Then, everything just seemed to drive me nuts. I started taking 3mg of Melatonin (otc on most pharmacy vitamin supplement shelves) about 20 minutes before I go to bed. It seems to help me stay asleep better. Sometimes, granted it don't, but most of the time it helps. Maybe you could start out with half a tablet, and if that is not enough, then try a whole tablet.
It may also help you not to become so tired and frustrated before going to bed. Feeling like that just seems to make things get worse as the night goes on.
Try taking the melatonin, read a little to relax or listen to some comforting music with volume set to very low. Just relax before trying to put on mask and go to bed. It really helps.

I agree with the others.
Why are you changing pressures? You don't have any way of monitoring your therapy and so might be flying blind. What was your initial pressure that the doctor ordered? I would suggest if you are going to change pressures do it slowly and wait a week. If you do ANY changes always do them individually and wait a week and see how your feel.
Do not make too many changes quickly or you won't know what is working and what isn't.

Thank for all your wonderful advice. To answer your question about the pressure the doctor order was 9 and then 11 because of snoring. I bumped it up to 13. I have had it at 13 for 5 months. I hate not having a data capable machine. I still haven't slept and it's the second night. I am so tired, but I can't sleep. My body either jolts awake, the swallowing, or the snort/snore noise. I feel like crying!
Have a cup of warm chocolate before going to bed. I can't offer much advice apart from going to bed to sleep (not read), put on some quiet relaxation music. The latter is to distract you from the breathing / machine noise. Then try to think about something nice or something not stressful that you'd like to do. I think about playing my guitar for example. If you have been in bed a while and not slept, I find it's better to get up and spend some time out of bed reading for a set period (30 mins) then going back and repeating the 1st time stuff.
I can relate to your problem and it does make you feel terrible, exhausted and feel as if you are going mad. But by doing the above i can minimise these nights.
I agree with others, I don't think you should chop and change your pressures.

I put the pressure back down to 13. I finally went to sleep around 4 A.M. Yeah I am not going to change the pressure again. Even though I still have a little snort/snore noise wake me up right when I fall alseep as long as I am calm I think I can try and go back to sleep. I ask my stepdad every once in a while if he hears me snore when he leaves for work. He says no. Thats good, because I used to snore so loud my bro in law said I sounded like a dinosaur or something. My nieces and nephew used to wake up because I snored so loud. Now I can sleep in the same room as them and their fine. I think I am coming down with something, because my stomach is nausious(not sure if I spelled that right.) and I just feel yucky. So I think that has something to do with it. This forum is a life saver! Thank you guys so much!
