Activa Nasal Masks

Post by fehler » Sat Feb 23, 2008 9:41 pm

Hi everyone

Just received my new Activa and having a hard time getting it adjusted. I know it is to be loose but no matter what I do I can’t stop the leaks. Those of you that have the Activa have any suggestions for me please help.

That's the only mask I've used. This is what I do but I don't know if it will work for you.

Turn on your machine.

Put on the mask and straps, making sure that the rear bottom of the strap lattice is pulled all the way down towards the bottom of your neck.

Lie on your back.

Remove the two velcro connections near your temples first and adjust them at the same time so that the forehead connection is snug but not too tight.

Remove the two velcro connections on your cheeks at the same time and slowly make them tighter and tighter until you have a good seal, then re-attach the velcro. The whole mask interface itself is a gasket so the mask is supposed to be very good with a variety of face sized and shapes. Too tight and you lose the gasket effect.

You may need to adjust the bridge piece as well (the little plastic tab in the middle of the forehead piece). It controls the distance between the forehead piece and the mask but it also affects the angle of the mask interface. I think the flatter the better?

Hang in there!

I think I got the bridge piece adjustment wrong. I said flat is best. For me it's just the opposite--like one or two clicks from the highest position. Hope you can get your Active working for you. It's a very good fit for me.

Bridge Adjustment

Post by BigGayBert » Sun Feb 24, 2008 12:42 pm

I love my Activa! I have tried lots of masks now but it's still my favorite. I think that the bridge adjustment is the most important one. Since everyone's face is different, there is no perfect position for everyone. I have found that adjusting the bridge piece eliminates the leaks around the bridge of my nose and my eyes. I really haven't had a problem with it sealing under my nose.

Good luck! Don't give up on this mask yet because it's great!

I have one from several years ago. I liked the mask, but, all masks leak. The Activa really seems to suck to your face, however. I wore the mask for at least 8 weeks which says a lot for any mask. My problem wasn't the leaks so much as the weight on my face and soreness under my nose in the upper gum area. Keeping my lips from leaking air was another factor, but that wasn't Activa's fault. If you don't have a mouth leaking problem, a little adjusting might do the trick. Try it a bit tighter.

Frank, From my experience the Activa is well worth the ole College try.

Let's assume you have the correct size (one can call them, toll-free # at their ResMed web site; ask for their "Patient Advocate", no charge to talk with her & she is great n' answers any questions - she was an Activa user when I talked with her a long while back; request the free Activa sizing template-they'll mail it to you no-charge- which is rigid plastic, easy to use and definitive.) Also, if you've not watched the accompanying DVD, be certain to do so, or even do a re-view.

Put the headgear n' mask on, turn on the CPAP, LAY DOWN on the pillows in what is your usual sleep configuration;

First address the forehead straps loosening them both at the same time back to the point where the forehead support doesn't quite but almost touches your forehead;

Next address the across-the-jaw straps loosening them both at the same time back to almost floppy, and then very slowly begin to tighten the straps incrementally till the air stops flowing out between the cushion and your face. Then, shift your position a little onto one side to test if the air begins to breakout from between the cushion and your face- if so, tighten the offending strap ever so lightly till air flow stops.

Oops, almost forgot.... the center adjustment (on the frame at about your mid nose level) - I seem to recall it adjusts the altitude (LOL) or tilt of the cushion - whatever! - but try each of those 4 positions (hope that's right) - till you discern which is most comfortable for you.

Also, in the night, should you notice leakage again, just slip your hands under the straps and with your two index fingers (one on each side of the more rigid portion of the cushion), and gently push the cushion in and down onto your face and hold for a second or two, then remove your hands.... that works for me. I wish you success overall.
