OT: Snow, SNOW And MORE Snow!!!

Post by Slinky » Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:01 am

Whoopee! We haven't had snow like this in our area since 1985! That year I was delivering mail down roads w/the snow so high it was like driving down a tunnel. Many patrons put the orange flags on a long pole you used to see on kids' bicycles in the snow banks to mark their mailbox and just cleared the face of their mailbox so I could open the door to deposit their mail.

For those of you who got snow - don't forget to shovel out the approach to your mailbox so your letter carrier can drive in to reach the box to put your mail in it! I know its discouraging when the plow comes down your road but your carrier can't be climbing out the window to deliver to all the mailboxes on their route. Some routes can have as many as 700 mailboxes on them. And NOTHING makes a letter carrier's day more than having to dig themselves out when they get stuck trying to deliver to a mailbox!!! Or having to be towed out.

Our WONDERFUL son-in-law actually plowed our drive (a long one!) before going to to work!!! Hubby's truck wasn't too hard to find as it sits up pretty high, but you could barely find my little ole Olds Cutlass Wagon!!! She's buried pretty good. Its gonna take the Massey and the snow blower to clear a path to the barn. The brave cat went out ... but the first time the front door was open again she was in like a shot!!! And was more white than gray! The other cats just wrinkled their whiskers and said thank goodness for litterboxes!!! Pansies! Wusps.

Me? I'm gonna curl up in front of the fireplace. Can't work a jigsaw puzzle 'cause of the cats but I can re-read a good book I haven't read in a while! My "walk" to the barn (ha! Walk? More like fought and waded thru waist high snow) to feed the horses is the extent of MY venturing outside today! Hubby can feed them tonite! Daughter and granddaughter are coming over to ride their horses thru the tree farm to feed the neighbor's horses since they can't find anyone to plow until .... LATE today at the earliest. Everyone they've called is backed up on plow jobs.

At the moment under sunny skies the temperature here is 49 degrees F with a forecasted high of 68 degrees F later today. I don't get to see much snow down in these parts so I imagine it's a pretty sight. Be sure to send me a postcard and you have a nice day you hear.

What was it called in 1985?

And, Stevo, it was 36 degrees in Arkansas the day after the tornados in the area my son lives. Fortunately, they were some 60 miles or so from Atkins.

Actually it's called "global climate change" ... the planet was much much warmer about 100 million years ago. Global climate is not static, it's always changing and there is NO intelligent design behind that process.

In 1985, it was called "global warming" but the process was not as well understood as it is now. That is why the politicos are all screwed up ... they are referring to outdated undestanding of the climate. We cannot reverse or stop the warming trend ...we have to adapt to it.

YEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAW!!!!!!

We got about 1 1/2' of snow. It's awesome!

2 words for some of you in snow belts "SNOW.... TIRES"

it's a beautiful -9 C up here.... what ever that is in F.

I made it in to work because I don't mind driving in this weather, but my kids are probably out making snow forts and what not.

I just called my daughter on her cell phone and they were just finishing up feeding and watering our neighbor's horses and about ready to head back.

The mare is 15.2 hands and the gelding about 15.1 hands (a hand is 4 inches). They worked their way thru snow up to their lower shoulder, their bellies and in some areas only up to or just below their knees. Surprisingly my daughter said the horses hadn't even worked up a sweat by the time they got up to the neighbor's barn. I didn't think they'd still be in that good a condition given their limited riding time lately. The gelding has a REALLY long tail and she said it just flowed out behind him on the snow like a flag or banner.

Daughter just called, they are heading back. She says the horses are still full of enough energy that they are showing PLENTY of spirit to get back home!!!

Wow! I'm 17.75 hands tall ... that's taller than a mare or a gelding!

If this "global warming" is being caused by too much CO2 ("greenhouse gases"), then the soultion seems pretty simple to me......PLANT MORE TREES (they need CO2 and give off oxygen). The rain forests have been cut down and burned over the time period they're claiming the earth has been warming. I don't buy into the claim that this has ALL been caused by humans, but "greed" has possibly contributed to it.
Actually, the earth has been warming since the last ice age, which I don't think was caused by humans, either. They say that some of the other planets in our solar system are warming, too. Martian SUVs?

The biggest reason the scientists have jumped on this bandwagon is because there's MONEY in "research". Given the opportunity, they'll study it to death......and then they'll want money to study why THAT happened.

So true ... humans are not completely to blame but they have contributed. Regardless, the fact is that climate is changing, always has, always will. In addition, the climate change process has it's own inertia ... so planting trees will make about as little difference as halting the use of hydrocarbons (pretty insignificant). That is why the focus should be on how we plan to adapt and not to stop or reverse inevitable trends.

The money research bandwagon, that's the way science works! True some things are indeed silly to study but there are silly people in every profession. I don't think we should eliminate scientists by starvation just because some do silly research ... I just don't think it would be a good idea (especially for me)

Besides, they could come in handy when it comes time to figure out the most efficient way to adapt

Why not let us try and get rid of a few lawyers and politicians first eh?

OK, must now research and study to death how to shield the oncomming flames from lawyer and politician members

My parents have 41 inches in their back yard. They live in Southern Oregon, and they haven't seen that much snow in awhile.

Ha! Gotta give MDOT a LOT of credit. And the county too. Our road's been plowed, its a rough ride, and tends to throw the smaller cars around a bit, but its plowed! My daughter's road has been plowed but its not in as good a shape as ours, but its plowed! The state highway is bare! Both lanes AND the two paved shoulders!!! I ventured out and went into town and filled the tank on my Cutlass Wagon and picked up a few groceries. Mostly snackies but they had some overripe bananas for 25 cents a pound so guess who is gonna make a couple of batches of banana nut bread tomorrow!!! Yummy!
