Bi pap

Post by Mitzi » Sun Feb 03, 2008 12:46 am

What is the differeence between a c-pap and a bi-pap? I am going to talk to my Dr. because it seems like with the pressure that I am on when I take a breath that is fine but when I try to exhale it seems like the air is to strong and I am pushing to hard to get it out..does anyone have this problem? thanks Mitzi

A bi level machine can give you major relief when you exhale because it has to separater pressure levels, one of inhaling (high) and another for exahling - which can be set much lower when that is appropriate.

No other kind of machine can give you that big a difference between inhale and exhale.

Bi- level machines are made by a number of companies, Respironics make makes a Bi level machine which is also automatic, and it's called a "Bipap Auto". Not simple auto, "Bipap Auto" and it has a comfort feature called "Bi-Flex".

thank you very much for the information....it was very informative....I am on pressure 19 and maybe that is why I have a hard time breathing out...I can breath in but then have a hard time breathing out as the pressure is so high...thanks, Mitzi

So far as I know, 20 cms is the highest pressure all straight CPAPs can sustain long term. They can run a little higher to compensate for leaks, but most likely would not hold up for long at a sustained presure higher than 20 cms.

Most bi-levels are built to run at sustained pressures as high as 25 cms for some and 30 cms for others. They can also run at a higher pressure to compensate for leaks.
