S8 ELite machine wheeze/whistle

Post by shardebhow » Fri Feb 01, 2008 12:30 pm

I've written before about the fact that my new S8Elite seems to making a wheezing/whistling noise when the mahie is on. It is not really loud just annoying like a dripping faucet. It changes pitch between breathing in and brathing out. DME rep stopped by and brought another machine to check the difference. There was none. They both had the same sound which she heard as well. You can hear that type of sound when you first turn on the machine. She said it's just a sound that the motor of this machine makes. Looks like I'll just need to get ear plugs. She did suggest maybe putting some sort of cover over the machine. . not covering the intake area, of course, as a way to damper the sound. I'll try it. . .but looks like the ear plugs may be the answer.

The Fisher and Paykel was a much quieter machine. . . but did not have data.

Well, since you have two Elites that do this you have some other options:

1] Set it on a folded towel to absorb some sound
a] a large mouse pad might accomplish the same
b] a piece of carpet should work as well
c] if you have an old typewriter pad that would be excellent

2] forego use of the EPR option

Personally, I would NOT cover it. Firm padding under it as suggested above would be a much better, and more effective, option.

I have this machine, and it seems very quiet to me. I do keep it on a folded towel, and I also have a fan going in the room to drown out house noise (years of shift work).

Also, is it the machine , or your mask making the noise as you breathe in and breathe out?

It's the machine

The tech from the DME heard it when she came over today as did my husband. It's the machine. When I put cotton in my ears (need to get ear plugs) I do not hear it. The mask I have had since my last machine and it never made this sound. I do know the breathing sounds and find that I have no problem with those.

Slinky,
I'll try your suggestion. It's worth a shot. It might be indicative of that machines motor and it's just something that is annoying to me. . .or that I notice and others do not. At least I know the ear plugs do get rid of it so all I hear is my breathing. I have not had the epr option on since I've had the machine. In fact the rep said. .will maybe the epr is on so she checked that. I did not want to tell her that I alredy checked to see that it ws not on. . .'cause afterall, I'm not supposed to know that.

Thanks again.
