Nose Hurts

Post by murried2 » Thu Jan 31, 2008 2:37 pm

The inside of my nose is cracking and bleeding and is very dry. I use a heated humidifier turned up as far as it will go. I use the Ultra Mirage FF mask, sometimes the quattro ff mask. I've been using Ayr saline gel before bed on the inside of my nose.

I called my dr office and they told me that I could use either a thin layer of vaseline or ky jelly.

I thought I'd check with you guys and see what you recommend.

I wouldn't use the Vaseline. There are posts around here about the potential problems with that practice. I would say of the 2 choices you posted, go with the KY. I have a similar issue, and use a Vit E ointment on the area of concern before using my CPAP and then in the morning as well. The nice thing about Vit E Ointment is that it has natural anti-biotic properties.

Check to make sure your HH is actually heating the water ... after turning it on for about 15 or 20 minutes, the water should feel warm (not hot). If it feels cold, you may have a defective HH or you really have not switched it on from your machine's menu.

You might be one of us who require more heat & humidity that we can get from the integrated heated humidifiers. I upgraded my humidifier to the F&P 150. No more dry sinuses!

Thanks for the input guys.

I do have the humidifier turned on, the water is warm after about 20 minutes.

I guess I'll be shopping for the f&p soon.

Try neosporin for a few nights. When my nose developed a sore from the swift, (on the inside, no less, because my pressure is too high for a pillow to shoot air at one spot and it cause a very bad ulcerated sore) the neosporin as well as changing masks, helped me.
It's too easy to get a staff infection or some other terrible thing with any kind of open sore now a days. Inside the nose or outside the nose.
Triple antibiotic ointment works well too, and turn up the humidity as high as it will go.

My ENT also recommended an ultrasonic cool mist humidifier for home and or office during the day and night. Also neosporine, as has already been suggested.

I found that using a cushion style mask, rather than a pillow style worked better for me. Not as much force on those dry membranes.

Good luck.
