Aussie Heated Hose, frozen nose
Aussie Heated Hose, frozen nose
I am waking up with "frozen nose" and use half a box of tissues daily for a runny nose. I use Ayr saline nasal gel and Lansinoh. I put the hose (with fleece cover) under my pillow for warmup before I go to bed. Between midnight and 2 a.m. I awaken with cold air blowing into my nose. Usually the hose is under the covers. Is it possible that hose had a defect? It's slightly warm when removed from under the pillows, but seems to cool off as it's used. My bedroom isn't cold.
I'm not getting the sleep that I need and I'm feeling the results. Any ideas?
Thanks, Pat

If you have the Aussie plug-in heated hose, one way you can tell if it's really working is to put the hose in a plastic bag and then plug it in. It should feel warm within minutes.

Pat, I suppose you have your resmed humidifier's heat turned up as high as it will go. The resmed humidifiers I've used never seemed to warm the water much at all unless turned up to at least the halfway mark. Even turned up all the way, they didn't put out as much warm humidified air for me as other brands of humidifiers.
How cold do you keep your bedroom temperature? You might consider adding an extra hose cover over the thin one that comes on the Aussie heated hose. I don't think they recommend putting an extra cover on it, but I've read of several people doing that.

I had asked the manufacturer about using an extra cover on the heated hose. I was told that it wouldn't be a problem. I made a fleece cover for mine and have used it for over a year now. The fleece can be removed and laundered, unlike the permanent cover that comes with the hose.

Brenda, that's a great idea, even if it's just so you can have something you can take off and launder!bdp522 wrote:I had asked the manufacturer about using an extra cover on the heated hose. Laura, which heated humidifiers have you found to heat the best?
Mindy, I've found, by accident, that when the hose has been turned on before going to bed and left under a pillow (oops), that you definitely feel the warmth then. But using the plastic bag is better, I think, because this other way takes a while.
Unrested, we don't use the same machine, but I've never had a problem with a cold or frozen nose since I've had the heated hose, even with my heated humidifier turned on 1. (Did before I bought it, though!) I even added a short piece of hose between my mask and the heated hose (with a fleece cover), and it's still warm enough even though the air has to travel through a short section of unheated hose. (I did this to lengthen the hose a little bit, and also because the extra weight of the heavier heated hose right at my mask was pulling on it too much.)

"Frozen nose" mean very very cold. As in "brrrrr, my nose is freezing".
I never have this with the heated hose.
I too wrap a snuggle hose around my heated hose.
O.

Hi
Sorry. Guess I wasn't clear about "frozen nose". I seem to have cold air blowing through the mask (after a few hours) making my nose COLD. I have a fleece cover on the hose and my bedroom is warm. The humidifier is turned halfway up. I will put the hose in a plastic bag tonight and see what happens.
Thanks for all the advise. I appreciate the help.

The two I've liked are:WearyOne wrote:Laura, which heated humidifiers have you found to heat the best?
1. Fisher & Paykel HC 150 heated humidifier. It's a separate humidifier that comes with its own short hose...can be connected to any brand/model machine.
2. The integrated humidifier for the older pre-M Respironics machines.
I've not ever used the M series humidifier that came with my M BiPAP Auto or my M Auto with A-flex, so I don't know how well it heats. The small capacity of the M's water chamber was laughable. And I sure wasn't going to go through the hassle of having to remove the chamber each time to fill it.
I use the F&P humidifier with the M machines and with the PB 420E. Also used it with resmed machines since I found the resmed Humidaire 2i way too wimpy heatwise and a pain to try to fill. Never have tried the 3i. It's just much simpler for me to use the F&P humidifier. Works great.
