I have reached my fifth week on CPAP.
Long before using the machine, I have been using ‘Breath Right’ adhesive strips to help open my nostrils so I could breath more comfortably at night. They did in fact help. Sadly, at least once a week I would lose some skin to them when removing them in the morning.
For the first 10 days on CPAP I was using a comfort gel mask. Because the nasal mask had the same elevated pressure on both the outside and inside of my nose, I still needed to use the adhesive strips to get the nasal passages open enough to breath. It was awkward having both the strips and the nasal mask on at the same time.
After reading about it here, I bought a Swift II nasal pillow mask and have been using it for about three weeks.
Because a nasal pillow mask has the pressure only on the inside of my nostrils, it slightly ‘inflates’ them and actually does (for me) a better job of opening up the passages then the adhesives strips were able to do (I’m not dissing the strips – if you are not on CPAP or not able to tolerate a nasal pillow mask they are a useful item!).
So, based on the auction price I paid for the Swift II, I will have broken even on adhesive strip savings and paid for mask in another 4 months.
I just thought that was kinda cool!
