skin sores

Post by HeatherN » Thu Jan 24, 2008 8:47 pm

Hi all. Need some advice. Hannah has been on CPAP since last summer and has been dong very well. This is her first winter on CPAP though. I am noticing for the last week she is starting to get some real red marks and one area that is becoming a sore.It seems to be on her cheeck near her mouth, where her full face mask covers. I know it is not helpng that her skin is really dry due to the cold weather. I am putting antibiotic cream on it in the daytime.Any suggestions??

Could it be from moisture collecting in the mask? If she uses a HH you might want to try turning it down, or possibly a hose cover?
You could try a very thin layer of Aquaphor on the sore spots before masking up. Just use a tiny bit and rub it in well. This will provide a protective shield for the area. I have used aquaphor with my masks many times with no problems. You might also want to try Lansinoh. Same thing, just a very thin protective layer.

Brenda, thank you! I never thought about it being an issue with the HH. We did get a new HH in the last month and have been dealing with some rainout issues. She has a hose cover but it isn't doing it's job. I think I will turn it down another notch and look for some really heavy material to make a new cover. I will try the aquaphor too. Appreciate the advice.

Don't forget about the Aussie heated hose! Try a double thick fleece hose cover first. But keep the heated hose in mind, I love mine.
