Side sleeping...Nose SORE!

Post by HeavyD » Wed Jan 16, 2008 6:17 pm

Well I've been wind riding for over a year...I am hooked, could not go off it if I tried...Before CPAP I slept mostly on my stomach and about a third of my side with my leg bent up hugging the pillow...I have been side sleeping with a firm memory pillow for the past 6 months. Well I wind up trying to roll onto my stomach in the middle of the night jamming the mask into the part between my lips and nose...I don't wake up until I'm in pretty bad pain, then its sore all day and feels better by bedtime. Depending on how I sleep it can get incredibly sore. Sometimes its not too bad if I stay on my side most of the night. Can I try a diferent delivery system like nasal pillows? I can't imagine going full face..Ugggh! Anybody have an option or thought?

Just a thought....but while side sleeping could you hug a full length body pillow, to prevent you from rolling onto your stomach?

I did think of that but the darn things take up so much room in the bed.
How do you like your mask?? Have you tried a nasal like mine to compare?

Yes, actually I started CPAP with your mask. I didn't have anything to compare it to.....then a relative showed me her Comfortlite and I stole it from her!

It was such a relief to have "that thing" off my face. I do use the cushion interface, as I don't do well with the pillows type that blow directly up your nostrils.

I also use a small microbead pillow that really molds more to my face and neck when I side sleep. However, I'm not sure how it would be with stomach sleeping.
I have neck and low back problems so can't sleep on my stomach.

Just thought of one other thing.....

I've heard of others on here putting a tennis ball in pajama pocket's (shirt on backwards), to keep them from rolling onto their backs. Maybe a tennis ball in a pajama pocket would URGE you to not stay on your stomach, if you got that way!

So crazy sounding....it just might work!

LOL !! Your scaring me!!!
Huh....the only problem is I LIKE sleeping on my stomach MUCH better than my semi side sleeping...I fear I may wake up with a sore nose and sore stomach! I may have to try your nasal setup.
Thanks for the replies!

Some folks on the board use a Headrest mask for stomach sleeping.

You might want to consider trying a carved-out pillow to make room for the mask. Something like sleepappillow.com.
I got desperate one night, and took a pair of scissors to an old polyfilled pillow. Started by carving out a little space on one of the long edges of the pillow to center my neck on the pillow (so I'd have a reference point for the side void where the mask would fall), then carved out both short edges of the pillow where the mask would protrude.

I don't use it all the time because I use a nasal mask, but if I ever use the full-face mask, I use this carved-out pillow. It seems to help a little. (Not a magic cure.) Looks and worked fine in an ordinary pillowcase.

Good luck!

I've also been experiencing a sore nose. Often I have woke up to my mask being totally dislodged. I'm starting to wonder if I have the right mask. Last week I woke up in the middle of the night with the hose totally wrapped around my neck! That was a little frightening.

S**t Happens! But why is it always happening to me?
