got my machine, finally
I finally got the cpap machine. That took a while to get from doctor to doctor and medical supply outfit. I got the Remstar Plus with c-flex. The ramp is 20 minutes from 4 to 9. At least I think it's 9. I slept really good, considering I have a ruptured disk in my lower back and am having surgery on that soon. If it weren't for that I'd have had a perfect night's sleep. I woke up feeling rested. I can't remember how long it's been since I felt rested. WOW I was pushing folks last week to get a move on with this thing because I'm having surgery and will likely be sedated for a day or two. I want to breathe at the same time, if it's all the same to them.
The machine I got is nice and quiet. The doctor didn't order a humidifier, though last night it wasn't a problem. I normally waky up stuffy but I didn't this morning. Clear as a bell this morning. The mask I got is a small ComfortGel mask with headgear. It is not uncomfortable at all. The only problem I have with it is that the areas of my face that touched the mask were red and sore to the touch this morning. This afternoon the areas are still red and a little swollen looking, though it doesn't hurt. That went away soon after I took the mask off. If this is all that happens with the mask, it's still worth it. I'll just have red cheeks from now on.
I am so glad my doctor decided to do a sleep study on me.

Hi Sue,
Good to hear from you again -- WOW -- it has been a really long time, hasn't it? And I thought that I had to wait a long time -- about a month!
Glad to hear that it is going well for you -- be sure to read the posts from Photogal a while back regarding CPAP and surgery -- interesting reading! Also Heidi (Sleeping with the Enemy) had some interesting surgical experiences.
I don't recall where you live, but you probably will be more comfortable with a heated humidifier in the long run.
There was a post recently from Seeverena about the "toilet seat cover" fix for the ultra Mirage FF -- basically a cloth interface between the mask and your skin that you make to fit (it ends up looking like a toilet seat cover shape). That might help with the redness. It seems like several posters are allergic to the material that some masks are made of, so reducing skin contact makes sense if the mask works in other ways!
Sometimes we have to get creative! I love the post about the pantiliner fix for the new Comfort Curve mask! LOL! Very clever! They say that necessity is the mother of invention.
Good luck -- it sounds like you are off to a GREAT start!

It also helps to soak new masks for 30-60 mins in warm soapy water. See Respironics rep's recommendation - question 64glassgal wrote:It seems like several posters are allergic to the material that some masks are made of, so reducing skin contact makes sense if the mask works in other ways!

And now here is my secret, a very simple secret; it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.

I finally got mine, too. I only had to wait two weeks between my 2 studies, then a week after the 2nd study to see the doc. He said I woke up about 80 times an hour! No wonder I was always tired!! I got set up on Monday and couldn't wait to go to bed. My hubby was amazed at how well he slept with my mouth shut!! I woke up with extra energy that I have not had for a very long time. Last night I didn't sleep quite as good, but I think that was because I was still wide awake when I went to bed Looking forward to going to sleep tonight. I haven't set up the humidifier yet, it sounds like a lot of work (maintenance) having to clean it everyday. What's the easiest way to get into the cleaning routine??

I'm in Eastern Oklahoma. Summers are humid here. I'm thinking in the winter I'll be needing that humidifier when we're heating the house.
I woke up with a little bit of a redness again. I slept pretty well. There was a thunderstorm last night with lightning and high enough winds to blow things off my front porch (my room is next to the front porch) and I didn't even wake up. Thunder almost always wakes me up to at least go check out the radar on TV to make sure we aren't having a Tornado watch or anything. I am sleeping soundly I guess, but I did wake up once or twice because of back pain. I noticed that my mouth was open twice. Now, how am I supposed to keep my mouth shut if I'm alseep? I've always been a mouth breather because I have small nasal passages and do have some chronic nasal allergies that cause the nasal passages to swell. I notice that I'm a lot clearer after sleeping with the mask all night. That's cool. We're having a whole house fan installed in the hallway. Since they broke all the plaster down to make the hole for the fan, my house has this "plastery, old house" smell. Ours is a remodled old house. I hate that old house smell, but I don't notice it with the mask on. tee hee. I'm sure the smell will be gone when the guys have all the work done and new plaster up where needed. I hope.
The mask I have is a small size. I don't know if they come smaller than small. The mask sits almost on top of my upper lip and right at the inner corners of my eyes. I'm hoping this isn't an allergy. The mask is nice and soft and doesn't hurt anywhere, unlike the one I used at the sleep study. That one was a bit hard.
