Apnea and Excessive sweating with physical activity

Post by snamvar » Wed Dec 15, 2004 11:03 pm

Hi,
For the past 15 years with my apnea at it's worst and undetected, I would sweat a lot from any physical activity. Even going to the Gym and doing some exercise although made me feel great, but I would sweat so much.
Has anyone had such an experience? Has it got any better using CPAP? Is this a side affect of Apnea?
I guess tiredness and lack of oxygen could cause that.
Thanks for any input.
P.S. Even going out dancing, makes me sweat so much that it becomes very awkward
I don't do mornings !!!

Sweating

Interesting question...
I sweat like crazy all the time but, since getting treatment for OSA, I seem to be drying up somewhat. I wonder if the treatment is making some difference. I'll watch for this more and let you know.

Hmm...I'm just the opposite. I have always overheated very quickly because I don't sweat well.
I got used to wearing contacts & braces, and now I'm used to CPAP, too.

Not sure about any increase in sweating because, like you, I've always drenched my clothes when exercising (or physically working hard). I've been on cpap since 1999 and haven't noticed any decrease. In fact, I've noticed that any increase is directly proportional to my weight. Oh well..... one vice at a time... food is next on my list

Hi. I'm brand new to the forum, but finding a lot of good info -

Was I surprised to see your posting about excessive sweating!

For years (more than 20) I have suffered from running warm all the time and experiencing excessive sweating when I tried to exercise. I used to wear shortsleeve shirts all winter long in Minnesota!

This accompanied my chronic fatigue and eternal sleepiness.

Just 6 months ago I was (finally!) diagnosed with OSA. Got me a nice REMSTAR PLUS CPAP with humidifier. My internal temp is lower now and I have to wear undershirts and longsleeves now indoors to stay comfortable.

Interesting "symptom" of sleep apnea.

I also tended to avoid dancing cause I'd sweat bucketfuls.

I guess when you don't get restful sleep, your mind/body shifts to first gear. I also feel much better with excessive sweating and my chronic fatigue.
Good luck and keep it up.

this is something i had never really thought about so thanks for bringing it up. i too in the last 3 years or so began to sweat profusley and now find out i had undected OSA for who knows how long. the down side is i dont think i will know for sure if there is a link for me as ji ust relocated to the wet tropics a few months back, currently we are in the wet hot and humid season, so everyone sweats like there is no tomorrow (humidity today was 92% temp is 37c/99f) so unless i go down south (which in australia is the cooler regions) or to another country for an extended period of time, i wont really know the answer! but i am now going to think about it more.

cheers gvd

Just throwing this out there, but could the sweating be related to high blood pressure? I'm not a sweat-er, but I do know what having OSA did to my blood pressure, which, incidentally came right down to low/normal right after starting CPAP.

Hmmmm.......maybe you're on to something here. I have sweated like crazy my entire life.......until I went through menopause. Finally.......I'm cooling off!.
I'm sorry if I can't tell by some of your usernames if you are male or female, but for me, I was intensely hot for about the 10 years I was going through perimenopause. But I've been hot my whole life too. Didn't really need a coat in winter. My hair in summer was always glued to my head with sweat. It would just drip off my face.
I started thinking that some of us just HAVE to sweat out toxins, while others don't. I feel so much better after I have a sweating episode......its like a real cleansing. But who likes to sweat all the time??
Very interesting. I wonder if there's a connection. Maybe we should take a poll!
One thing though is that people on certain meds can sweat alot.......like SSRIs.
Maybe there's something about our stress hormones (with apnea) that increases our likelihoods of sweating?? Definitely something to ponder.

I sweat profusely when I exercise.

It's because I'm FAT !!!

30 years ago, I'd have to run 10 miles to break a sweat. Now I break a sweat when I bend over to tie my shoes.

Hi, there are (minor) medical conditions that cause some people to sweat a lot more than normal - nothing to do with OSA - and your GP could refer you to a specialist to get it checked out (there are treatments).

I'm one of those people who "leak" all the time during the warmer months. I sweat very easily and have most of my life. I'm considered obese by the charts but even when I was "normal" weight I sweated easily. Some people say they wish they could sweat like me. Hmm, soaked shirts, business shirts, all my shirts, get soaked in the summer or when the temperature is above 80f degrees.

I was up on a ladder the other day working on some testing some telephone wiring and normal building temperature of about 70 or so...I sweated then. What makes the problem worse is that I have a shaved head as I have not many choices in hair styles. Therefore the sweat does not hide well. I'm used to it, I worry when I don't sweat in the warmer months and I always drink my 6-8 glasses of water or more. Plus I'll make sure I keep my minerals up. If you'd ever see some of my tee shirts in the summer I could sell the mineral rights.

I've only logged about 135 hours on my CPAP so maybe this summer will be a bit different...time will tell I guess.

I sort of doubt it has anything to do with OSA.

I hardly sweat at all.... and have OSA.

Hey Julie,

Maybe you could list for us a few of those "minor medical conditions" so anyone interested could do a bit of research b4 seeing the GP/MD. Some of us like to be proactive in our own treatment (ie. we are on this forum), perhaps this is also mixed in with a bit of distrust for the medical profession. Thanks.
