Difference between Remstar M and Remstar A-Pap

Post by hotrod53 » Mon Jan 14, 2008 8:25 pm

I friend just got the RemStar A-Pap and his auto ranges, I was wondering if my Remstar M autoranges as well. It does seem that it blows stronger when I first go to bed and when I wake up later in the evening it blows less. His is set up to range from 6-20 and his display shows that it hovers around 9. Mine ramps from 6-9 but I don't know if it ramps to 9 and stays there or not. I don't use the ramp feature anyway, I just hit the middle button and let it go.

It will depend upon which of the M models you have. It should tell you on the top of the machine.

I have an M series Apap with C-flex. Mine is set for a range of 8 cm to 12 cm. I have the ramp feature but do NOT use it.

The ramp feature is not the same as having an APAP. The ramp starts the machine out at a lower pressure and over a preset time raises your pressure to the prescribed number.

Start Date: 8/30/2007 Pressure 9 - 15

Your cpap delivers a set pressure constantly.

The C-flex feature "softens" (some of you more savvy jump in) the pressure when you exhale. This feature makes it easier to exhale against the pressure the machine is set for.

The reason that it doesn't feel like it is blowing as strongly after you have been on your cpap for a while is that your body becomes acclimated to it and has gotten use to the constant pressure.

Unfortunately, the RemstarPlus M series machine is at the lowest end of the M series machines. It does show compliance (meaning you have used it) data, but is not data capable in that it can show apneas, obstructions, etc. That is the machine I started with and quickly changed to an APAP (as per doctor's script). It (the RemstarPlus) will provide adequate therapy, but can not help you locate problem areas that might need tweaking.

As far as my headboard goes, I have a king size bed (will not trade it for a smaller size). Our bedroom does not have space for a seperate night stand so we modified a waterbed headboard to use with our regular king bed. It has the shelves and my machine is setting at the shelf that is nearly level with the bed. It is providing adequate therapy for me and is a better alternative than not using it. Setting on the floor is not an option as I have a pet dachsund that would have a field day chewing, slobbering, licking, and trying to get "it" to play with him (not counting him chewing on the hose).

The plus is a basic cpap machine. It has no data or apap abilities. It operates at one steady pressure. The ramp will start the machine at a preset pressure and raise the pressure over time(0 - 45 minutes) to the pressure the machine is set to operate at.
Here's more info on your machine from cpap.com;

The Remstar Plus is a straight CPAP, meaning that whatever the pressure is set to, that is what it's blowing all night long (excluding ramp time, if used) an APAP will try to find the most desirable pressure to eliminate Apnea events based on the range selected.
Another difference is that the Plus will only give you compliance data, the APAP is capable of tracking your sleep progress (AHI, snores, etc.) and leak rates for your masks.

The reason for you feeling like the machine is blowing less when you wake up is that your mind is not thinking about breathing when you wake up. You have just become used to the machine.
