No Prescription

Post by RB98 » Wed Jan 09, 2008 12:56 pm

I have a friend who completed the first night of sleep study and was diagnosed wth severe sleep apnea. His insurance was cancelled before completing the 2nd night for the titration study. A year later he is feeling exhausted. He wants to purchase a machine out of pocket and I suggested an APAP since he doesn't know what his pressure setting should be. Seems like he ought to be able to set a range and let the machine find his optimum pressure. Problem is that he of course does not have a presription. Does he need a prescription to get a used machine? Anybody else have this problem getting a machine?

For legal purchase in US, one needs the Rx.

He should be able to just go to his gereral practition doc and discuss the issue and try to convince the doc into an Rx for an APAP ... just another example of why the US places as it does in national healthcare

I was called the night before my scheduled sleep study to be told my insurance didn't cover this. After feeling awful for a couple more years, I called the sleep doctor who I had met at my first appointment. He was nice enough to fax a rx for an auto to cpap.com for me. I paid for it myself and it's the best thing I could have ever done. Good luck!

If you REALLY need a machine keep an eye out on Ebay they sometimes have some listed . Use buy it now if you can, as Ebay pulls them off quickly as it is against their policy. My neighbor got a Respironics M series APAP with aflex for 250.00 shipped . No asking for an RX. I wish I would have seen that. .

Yes, an APAP would be a good idea for your friend in his situation, Rick.

If you have a copy of your prescription, Rick, have you thought about buying yourself a backup machine?

An Rx that has the word "cpap" on it is good for buying an autopap from cpap.com. The Rx doesn't have to say "autopap" to buy an autopap from cpap.com. Nor is there any limit to the number of machines you can buy with your one prescription.

Your friend is lucky to know you, Rick. I think you'll be able to find him an autopap pretty soon, since he's willing to pay for it.

I liked Den's (Wulfman's) post.

I sort'a thought there were benfits to having friends on CPAP than just yapping with them on cpaptalk.com

Also a illegal machine can provide treatment, just remember to make sure it's not plugged up with pot.

I didn't know "BACKUP" machines were illegal.....even if they've been used as a "planter" for an agricultural experiment.

I think the possibility of the sleep doc giving you a script for an apap since you had a study there (or the ordering doctor) is a good one in view of being diagnosed but unable to get the titration. Can't imagine a doc getting a diagnosis on a patient and not helping them get treatment.

By the way, Craigslist has them all the time. About 5 of them in my area right now. It's just buyer beware. I saw a woman ask for one on Freecycle a while back and she received one right away.
