Cleaning CPAP in Mexico

Post by mike111 » Mon Dec 31, 2007 12:23 am

Hey folx;

I am off in 2 weeks to tour Mexico for 3 months in an RV. I have read the water there is not to be consumed. How would you suggest I clean my CPAP (& mask & humidifier)? TIA . . . . Mike

Bring lots of distilled water with you.

Bring a container of Cpap cleaning wipes (I got mine through one of the 'other' Cpap co's) which are in a plastic holder like baby wipes you'd buy in the drugstore. No water necessary.

Cleaning mask in Mexico

Since you're in an RV, I'm guessing you are taking distilled water to use in your humidifier. Those wipes that were mentioned also sound like a great idea.

As for me, I'm not one who cleans my mask daily unless I have a cold. Unless a lot of road dirt got in the RV, I think I'd relax my cleaning frequency standards and just keep the mask in some sort of protective bag when not in use, preferably something that "breathes". In a bind, a pillows style mask could be covered with a coffee filter and secured with a rubber band or twist tie. (Sorry, didn't look at what mask you use before typing.)

I like Snoredog's idea of cleaning with something "safe" that's bottled. Just wondering what would happen if one did that when out of distilled water for their humidifier. And if that has to come out of the entertainment budget.

Enjoy your trip.

Kathy

I've taken my cpap to Mexico during three, one-week vactions (I LOVE Cancun) but never in an RV. I'm not one to clean my mask regularly anyway but using bottled (drinking) water purchased in Mexico never caused me any problems.

Viva Mexico!

I assume that you will be filling your RV fresh water tank using otherwise clean water of questionable purity. One oz of chlorine laundry bleach (Clorox) per 40 gallons of water should kill just about anything in the water other than Cryptosporidium or Giardia.

Boiling and cooling this water will kill anything left in it and will remove the chlorine.

I wouldn't drink this water without boiling it, but it would be OK for washing and bathing. I would wash my mask normally in the chlorinated RV tap water and then give it a final rinse in either bottled drinking water or boiled and cooled RV water. Dishes can also be washed this way.

Hi, I live in Mexico and tab water is not a problem, also destilled water is not a problem, if you run out of cleaning soap you can buy "Maestro limpio" powder detergent in any supermarket like walmart, soriana, comercial mexicana, or gigante, this detergent is great, for me is better than the Ivory recomended by resmed. If you run out of destilled water don't worry, but don't look for it in a drugstore, better go to the same supermarkets I listed and buy ironing water, the best brand is one in a green bottle manufacured by black and decker, you can find it in Soriana or gigante, hope this help.

You could always boil water and then use it if you are concerned and can't find a local source and run out of what your brought.
