Howdy,

Ok, CPAP user it is. Although SAPs and People of the Hose both gave me a chuckle, but for very different reasons.

RG your eye glasses vs CPAP example was great. I hadn't thought of it in quite that way before but it makes a lot of sense to me. In my case, I suppose contact lenses are a similar thing. I'm using them until the risk of painful surgery is replaced by something more palatable (pun totally intended).

Thanks for the ideas and a very entertaining thread.

Johnny

OK, now that that one is settled, how about a whole seperate forum on how to defeat the DME that wants to give you what they want you to have instead of what you want...details available if interested....

Finally have time to weigh in with an opinion.
From what I've read, "Person with a respiratory related sleep disorder" makes the most sense.
But could we please do away with the term "politically correct"? I find it hideously offensive.
I'd prefer "respectful" - it doesn't have the snide connotations.

Re: terms

[quote="ozij"][quote="Mile High Sleeper"]The most PC term I know, from medical support group training, would be "people with sleep apnea." As in "people with cancer," "people with Alzheimer's," etc. The intention is to remember they are people, not the disease or condition.

If they are on xPAP, I favor CPAP user. xPAP is not as widely known as the generic CPAP.

"patient" implies a passive, almost victim stance to me. OK if communicating in a medical setting, but not to the general public or to proactive CPAP users.

They throw a cpap machine at you and that's it. These same professionals check my blood pressure every time I visit, despite the fact that they've already given me medication. They check my lipid level and other blood work as well.
Very good point, Rosemary! Going to try it on my doctor next week.

Recovering apneaic
SDB (or OSA) patient (or sufferer) in treatment

These would be most applicaple to xPap users as opposed to those who are undiagnosed or untreated.

Along the same vein... I hate the word compliance. I am not complying with anything. I am making a decision to treat a condition I have, not complying with a demand or order anyone has given me!

I'm right there with you on that, Annie. "Compliance" is a word used often in regard to cpap treatment. I dislike that word very much for exactly the reasons you gave.

Politically correctness is destroying our language, and our sense of who we are.....I'm offended by those who insist on being PC, not by the words!!!!!

Sorry. Couldn't help myself.......(But I'll save the diatribe on "words" and whose problem "being offended" really is.....)

cheers

"Hi, Ted!" I am a SDB Client - Your wish is my command. Client is the term used by many who have no choice in what comes next??

As a client I am lead by a long hose to the all powerful DME & all knowing Sleep Deprived Dr. (SDD).

"Compliant: complying; obeying, obliging, or yielding, esp. in a submissive way: a man with a compliant nature." Source: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/compliant

Thinking no one on this forum is "compliant." "Defiant" better describes our style as we disobey and take matters into our own hands. Wishing my machine could monitor my "defiance" as well as my "compliance" ;<)!
