News report about sleep apnea

Post by Pad A Cheek » Wed Dec 12, 2007 5:50 am

I ran across this video when I was doing research and thought it did a fair job of explaining sleep apnea and a little bit about the effects.

Thank you for that report. Is it possible for you to do the link about OSA and children with ADD that was supposed to be reported the next day?
Thank you again.

Kids sleep

I could not get the video to play for me, but you may be able to get it to work for you.

Here is the link to the story for the Kids and ADHD. As it turns out this child did not have sleep apnea, so this may not be as helpful

Minor correction

Post by split_city » Wed Dec 12, 2007 8:06 am

It was mentioned in the video that sleep apnea "occurs in deep sleep." While events certainly do occur in REM sleep, most events occur in light sleep, particularly at the wake-sleep transitional period.

First off deep sleep and REM are two different sleep stages. REM is where apnea is the worst for some people since its the stage in which most of the body is paralyzed.

This video is from my hometown! Have we finally made it to the real world?

Well if you classify "deep sleep" as being SWS, the video would still be inaccurate...even more so than if they actually meant REM sleep.

Video on sleep apnea

Post by kteague » Wed Dec 12, 2007 2:49 pm

Thanks for posting that link. It makes me appreciative that in the 3 different sleep labs I've used, none made me try to sleep in a hospital bed. Must have been a traditional hospital bed mattress in the video, as it sure sounded noisy when she got in. I can't imagine adding that factor to all the other discomforts and being expected to sleep. But she got her diagnosis, and the newscaster did quote statistics that hopefully will prompt some viewers to ask their doctors for a sleep study. Every bit of awareness is a step in the right direction.
