How long do your Swift nasal pillows work well?

Post by Country4ever » Sun Dec 09, 2007 11:37 am

Hi all,
I find that I can use lots of the tubing parts for longer than they say I should use them, except for the Swift nasal pillows (original design). I find that right about at a month, the nasal prongs must thin out and start not sealing, or start fluttering. Anyone else find this to be true too?

I use AYR gel in my nostrils before masking up at night, that and a clean nasal pillows works good for me, I have gotten 6 months of near steady use out of the Swift 2 mask, and find with the gel it seals well, I have a brand new Swift 11 ready for when I will need it, but washing it daily in baby shampoo and gelling up with AYR gel at night is working for me, no mater witch pillow type mask I use, make sure you have the right fit..

Hi Ed,
I think I'll try some of that gel........it just might keep things in place alot longer than a month. Thanks for that suggestion.

I also marked the adjustment areas on the straps when I would get a good fit, so I have a reference point to return to when needed, for this I used whiteout to mark the straps white being very visible.

I have always heard that "great minds think alike" Ed.. I marked mine the same way a couple of months ago. I got tired of re-adjusting and guessing..works great!

I wash my swift II pillows every day and I probably have close to 4 or 5 months on them. I have tons of other masks I have tried, but I always end up going back to the swift II. I should really get some backup pillows for the thing. I keep hoping one of the new masks will work because i don't like the headgear on the swift, but the pillows, man, the perfect fit, keep me coming back!

I find I need to replace mine about every 6 weeks or so. Of course DME is having a fit with me since they are replacing them without charge. The last time I called for a replacement they told me that if I keep having this "problem" they will have to notify the manufacturer. LOL!

Hi Country4Ever , I also use the Swift 11 and I have had mine for 4 1/2 to 5 months now and notice some really bad long leaks, it might be to because it shifs on my face as I am mainly a side sleeper but do roll over over on my back for awhile after i'm fast asleep but always wake up on my side. I have definately noticed that it leaks much worse than it did it the beginning. I had to go to my DME today (sleep study center) and pick up a new one (swift 11, hose, filter's & white filter's (can't WAIT TO SEE WHAT THEY CHARGE MY INS. for this stuff) Blue Cross told me that's where I have to go to get my replacement stuff, I told them I could get it WAY cheaper online but if they like to pay TRIPLE charges, then so be it but I am the one that has to eat the leftover . Maybe you should upgrade your system to the swift 11 replacement barrell & pillows???

My DME resists replacing the nasal pillows and oral cushions for our Hybrid masks, but I know that they are not sealing as well as they did earlier. I finally sent them information from the Medicare website that showed that Medicare would pay for two replacements a month!

What I don't understand is why, with the huge profit margin ($45 for a pair of nasal pillows???) built into the prices, the DMEs resist ordering them...

Changed my filter like every month cos I can see it getting very dirty. Just bought the 420E and does anyone know whether the 420e filter comes in a pack of 50?

Newbie question with Swift II

Post by Flash699 » Tue Dec 11, 2007 11:03 pm

I've only been on CPAP a couple weeks and they just moved me from a mouth and nose mask to the Swift II mask. Maybe it's a coincidence but immediately I had massive head cold symptoms: drainage, head felt 2X in size, red, watery eyes, etc. Stayed with it a couple nights but last night went back on the mask and felt much better (but not perfect) today.

Read around the forum and seems that this is common with nasal pillows but my DME tech told me I shouldn't be having problems with this type. Any comments, experiences, or observations out there?

Thanks,

Flash
