I think everyones experience is different.
I had Septo-rhinoplasty with turbinate reduction about a year and a half ago. I thinking I was really LUCKY with my surgery though.
I had very little bleeding.
I only had the very interior tip of each eye lid to bruise.
I kept a crushed ice pack-on as much as I could stand to.... when I could.
The worse part, as side from mother passing during this , was I had the sinus headache from hell. OH DID IT HURT!!!!!!!!!!
My nose really never did hurt.

I had Septoplasty, Turbinate reduction and one other thing I can’t remember right now but it had to do with Turbinate’s and air pockets. This was done on November 28th last week. Not only did I have a deviated septum but I had a large bone spur on my septum that they removed as well.
The day of surgery was a blur. Had to be at the surgery center at 6:30am. In surgery at 7:30. Home on couch by 11:30am. My only major complaint right after surgery was a very sore throat. My nose didn’t bother me too much. My doctor used a fairly new product that is a gel packing no gauze at all. I have had no bleeding from my nose at all. The first 3 days were not too bad thanks to the codeine. Although I always have issues when I quit using it. So Sunday was a bad day. More pain and general crankiness. I did have lots of trouble sleeping the first 4 nights. I’m not a back sleeper so sleeping with 3 pillows under me did not work to well. I have no recliner so I just sat up on the couch and cat napped. I have now asked for a recliner for Christmas. I did have a couple of bad sinus headaches. It’s really been more like a bad head cold then surgery.
I went in for my post surgery follow up on Tuesday this week and the Dr sucked some of the gel out of my nose and then put a little back so a turbinate would not stick to my septum. I love modern technology. The gel does not need to be removed at all. It will be absorbed by the body if left alone. But after he removed some I could breathe like a champ. Today was the first day I actually caught myself sitting at work with my mouth closed. I use a Swift II and the bottom of my nose is still too sore to go back on the hose but I hope to try this weekend.
So bottom line for me was, off work at least 5 day maybe 7. Worth it so far. I’ll check in again in a couple of weeks. I don’t expect this to cure my Apnea but it sure will make using APAP a lot better.

I had double septoplasty resection, turbinate reduction (both sides) and double bone spur removal Nov. 20, 07 so I am on day 16 since surgery. I was a rare case but the main thing I hated was the gel packing, they put so much in there that before being released from the hospital, I could feel it all the way down to my uvula in my throat so I was choking & constantly spitting and I felt sooooooo stuffy, I went to the doctor the next day and he pulled the packing up and out towards the front of my nostrils and cut a little off but I was still like that until my post-op a week later. If it wasn't for that, it wouldn't of been so bad. I wish they would of used the splints on me instead of the gel packing! The gel packing is soaked with 4% cocaine so that is why there isn't much pain and i'm wondering if maybe that has something to do with the sinus headache we come out of the operating room with. I wouldn't ever of known about this if I hadn't asked for the surgery report from my doctor and I also called the hospital & asked for an itemized billing statement be sent to me showing every charge and saw the cocaine listed in that ! I NEVER had any brusing at all, eyes we're NOT BLACK, my nose turned a little brown after about the 2nd. or 3rd. day and then went away a few days later. I ate jello, soup, crackers, and I used a baby eyedropper to put water and gatoraid , sprite, etc in my mouth as I would choke if I got to much having so much packing down my throat! They more than likely won't put that much in your nose though so don't worry, you will do great! I only used a total of 1 and 3/4 vicodins and then I primarily stayed on tylenol (extra strength) and some days, I didn't even need that The main thing is the headache and the packing and your body coming off the meds they put you out with. You might want to buy some stool softners such as dulcolax and take 2 a day if you are going to be using your pain meds as directed! I have lost 4-6 pounds so far and I am still weak & fatigued but other that that, I am sooooo happy this is all over. I go to my 3 week follow-up this monday and then hopefully I am finished . I miss my cpap but I don't think I can use it for another 3 to 3 1/2 weeks. Would I do this again,, YES, YES, YES, in a heartbeat. It was truly worth it, maybe not the packing but everything else. Good luck and let us know when you get your appointment and then of course, post after the surgery when you feel well enough to! Take good care ok?? BTW, my VOICE never changed at all, I don't know why it would.

Hey everyone. I just had the surgery. I am on day six but I still feel pretty congested. I guess I thought I would feel much less congested by now. Is this normal at this stage? I don't exactly have splints up there, more or less tubes to help me breathe. He told my not to touch it at all so there is a lot of blood and mucus up in there. I have a speech class I will be taking in a couple weeks at university. Will I be able to take that class or will i sound like a congest fool all throughout it.
ur right. now I have one last question cuz i had my splints out and i could breathe better immediately. However a day afterwards i am a little more congested then I was when the splints first came out. Is that normal or is something wrong? Sorry I guess I shouldn't worry as much as i do. I am kind of a worry wort. When I take my oxycodone all of my anxiety disappears in a flash. LOL
On a related note would nose exercises be okay to do? If you haven't heard of it, all you do is bring down ur upper lip back over ur teeth as far as u can while keeping ur finger on the tip of your nose. Try it just now, u can really feel it in ur nose. Would nose exercises like this be harmful or helpful for recovery? I just tried it and now my nose is a little sore.

Sounds normal. You will probally also have nasal crusting. You can use a saline rinse to help.Anonymous wrote:ur right. now I have one last question cuz i had my splints out and i could breathe better immediately. Never heard of that one. However.... I do know it is best to keep pressure off of your nose.... so it may be best to take to your ENT about that one.

Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
i just had septoplasty on monday...we are friday. i have been spitting out a bit of mucus mixed with blood. i feel as if there is constant taste of blood in my mouth and when i opened it to check int he mirror i can sea a stream of blood and mucus down the back of my throat. the blood isn't really dark or dry it's just blood. i'm a bit worried this is abnormal or am i worrying myself sick?
any help would be really appreticated!!

Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
Call and see your ENT, you shouldn't be bleeding a week after surgery, discharge of clotted blood would be expected. My daughter had that procedure done on Oct 23rd, think it was a Thursday, she went back to work on Tuesday the 28th. There was discomfort but not a lot of bleeding as her doctor used a laser for most of the surgery resulting in less bleeding. She is reporting she feels tons better already. Her doctor was in Sherman Oaks and really good.question for blood in back of throat from septoplasty wrote:i just had septoplasty on monday...we are friday. i have been spitting out a bit of mucus mixed with blood. i feel as if there is constant taste of blood in my mouth and when i opened it to check int he mirror i can sea a stream of blood and mucus down the back of my throat. the blood isn't really dark or dry it's just blood. i'm a bit worried this is abnormal or am i worrying myself sick?

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
Re: septoplasty and turbinate surgery
thanks for the reply. i guess now i'm a bit worried. the constant taste and spitting seems to have diminished. however i have a feeling it's not completly gone. we are friday night...so all the people i need to see are closed. my only option is to go to the hospital and wait overnight till someone sees me. i guess i'll wait it out a bit more... this just really sucks
so spitting normal looking blood mixed with mucus is not norml 5 days post op?
