I have COPD so my lungs weren't worth crappola BEFORE I started CPAP. But, no, I've not had more exacerbations of the COPD since starting CPAP. In fact, I've had less. One thing that most always brought on a COPD exacerbation for me was a head cold or sinus drainage. IF it went on more than 3-4 days guaranteed it was going to drop into my lungs and I was going to end up on antibiotics.
On the other hand, I started CPAP in Oct 06 and in Jan 07 I started taking part in a COPD clinical trial with low, one dose a day, Zithromax (or placebo). The theory being that Zithromax has some anti-inflammatory properties and thus could reduce the number of COPD exacerbations. So? Who knows? I finish the clinical trial in Jan 08. We'll see what happens after that.

I voted "No." With the obligatory click-submit-a-second-time to get a vote to stick.
No cough, no lung problems. Four years of good "autopap" treatment so far.
And that's with just adding more distilled water to the heated humidifier each night...not dumping out the unused or cleaning the humidifier chamber in any way except perhaps a couple of times a year. I use the same hose night after night after night without doing anything to it either.

I voted YES! I used to have lung issues with using the cpap, I felt like I had pluracy or phnemonia one and it would last for hours after I got up, it only happens every now & then now! Try an Aussie Heated Hose, you won't get all that water in your nose or lungs... I did and it helped tremendously!

First, sorry to you fine folks who voted "yes". I hope your issues are resolved soon.
Since I started CPAP, my adult health has never been better. (I still see room for improvement, but it's been much improved.)
(Not counting the influenza that I came down with the day I picked up my CPAP) I've had far fewer colds and my lungs are clear.
The reason, PAP therapy reduces some of the localized and systemic chronic inflammation that OSA burns into our sinuses and airways.
In the past few weeks, I've upgraded to an APAP w data capabilities; and, I'm seeing preliminary improvement over straight CPAP (but it's too soon to tell for certain. I'll post about this when I have at least a month of data.)
Regards all, and good luck with your pappian therapies.

I voted no - I'm much better off since cpap - started for real in April 2005 - and with the same - rarely washed - heated hose everynight.

I voted yes. I was seriously ill when I started CPAP therapy about two years ago. I had developed polycythemia due to the lack of oxygen. My health has improved slowly and significantly since starting CPAP.
However, CPAP can be an irritant to the airway and that has been the case with me. I have developed what appears to be severe airway allergies (like asthma amoung other things). The doctor is working the issue with me.
CPAP, the thing that keeps me alive, is slowly killing me. I cannot do without CPAP and must always be 100% compliant. This Forum and its members (opinions and knowledge shared) are the reason I am 100% compliant. Life is better with CPAP than it was without it, even with the new problems. Bottom line ..... I'm happy.

Gotta join the 'no' gang here - actually I've had far fewer sinus problems since going on CPAP then before. I've also not had a cold since I started about 1 year ago either.

Even though I had coughs, colds and the flu the year I started therapy (2005), "the majority rules"......and since I have not had any of those things for a full 2 years now, I voted "No".

Re: Have you had coughs or other lung problems since CPAP
I have chronic bronchitus from working in fiberglass boat manufacturing years ago and allergic to many plants and grasses and the humidifier actually helps my lungs and makes me feel alot better on the autopap.less coughing spells.and lungs are more content
