Cleaning CPAP equipment

Post by wankel » Mon Nov 26, 2007 1:24 pm

Guys, I know its been beaten to death here but I don't seem to be able to find any soap, detergent, or cleaner that is fragrance-free for cleaning my cpap.

Products such as Control III and RespiClean seem to be made for disinfecting rather than cleaning.

Question - would hydrogen peroxide work as an adequate cleaner for cpap tubing, masks?

Thanks...

W

I don't t hydrogen peroxide would be a good choice. I a;m not 100% sure but I would think it might react with the silicone. Most folks use Johnsons baby shampoo or the unsented Dawn dishwashing liquid. I would think either one should not have much of a smell. I use the baby shampoo and don't notice an smell when I finish. There has been one more mentioned by a lot of folks and that is Dr Bonners natural soaps. I know they have a web site but I thought the could be found in a lot of pharmacys also

Liquid Neutrogena Facial Cleansing Formula, Fragrance Free would be a good choice.

Go up to the Search function and search on "cleaning" and you'll probably have WAY more reading than you want.
There's probably still a thread (and 2 polls) on the first two forum pages yet from the last few days.

Dr. Bronner's soap it is! Stopped by a health food store and got a bottle of unscented. Uncapped it and it is truly unscented.

Thanks a million. Even a dilute solution of baby shampoo left a smell that persisted for a week or more.

Wankel,

I swear by that Dr. Bronner's soap. It is good stuff. Not cheap, but I don't use much, so it is affordable.

Indeed. There are literally hours of reading on every bottle label. Weird reading.

I found some soap tonight while searching for the unscented Dawn (my local grocer didn't carry it) that is called "Planet" It is certified biodegradable, unscented and uncolored, hypo-allergenic.

Ingredients are: Coconut oil based cleaners, salt, and sodium bicarbonate.

Web site is: http://www.planetinc.com

What do you guys and gals think? Did I stumble on a good product, or should I dump it?

The Planet cleaner should be fine as long as the coconut oil doesn't leave a residue on the mask. I read and it says it cuts grease, can't figure out how oil can cut grease, lol. Maybe I'm just a little thick tonight.

Virtually all "soap" is oil or grease-based at some level.

The process where grease can be made to cut grease is called saponification.

You'd have to think back to great-grandma's old lys soap to get the picture of how this actually works. What is lye soap? Lard rendered with wood ashes. Is it powerful? You bet... It will take your skin off.

I'm just wondering about the ingredients -- from reading their web site, it would appear that they have a fairly safe product. They even advertise it for use as a shampoo or bubble bath... I'll let everyone know how it works. If it is as advertised, I'm gonna be hooked.

Here is the Wiki article on saponification -- it is somewhat technical, but you'll get the general idea.
