Hi Stevoreno,

I have been on Synthroid for the last 21 years. Once they establish what level you should be taking, you will probably only be checked annually. Until then more recent checks may be necessary to monitor how your body is absorbing the hormone.

I take 200 mcg which is alot more than the 25mcg you are being prescribed. If you read the small print on ANY medicine, it will scare you half to death. Just be sure to go to all your labs and don't worry about the rest. . . See you in the chat room.

It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact I'd have to take a pill for the rest of my life. I've been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism for 9 years in December. I'm currently taking 200MCG since the end of June after going for several years not getting checked and not taking my med. But now I've gained a lot of weight from not taking care of myself, and I have to take a lot of other meds on top of that one pill. I wish I would of listened to how important it was to keep my Thyroid in check. Now I have the taking meds down, now if only I could get this keeping my BiPAP on all night...

I have heard about thyroids but in all of my 52 years I have never had it or them checked; it wasn't even recommended that I have it or them checked back in my 1999 sleep lab report. I guess that's one positive thing in this latest sleep lab report; it was at the top of the sleep lab doctor's list; patient needs to have thyroid checked to R/O hypothyroidism. I asked my primary care doc's office this late today; in all the bloodwork that I've had done in the last 2 years through his office; why didn't he recommend I have it checked; his nurse said the doctor didn't think it was necessary. Well apparently the sleep lab doctor thought it was necessary. I just hate the thought of having to take another pill for the rest of my life with all the adverse side effects I read about that pill on the Internet today. Thanks to everyone's recent posts.

That I should have ......? Had my thyroid or thyroids checked? A thyroid board? There is a discussion board for thyroid problems? Thank you for your post.

Hi Stevo!
I've taken Synthroid for 4 years, 75mcg. My Doctor insists on checking it every three months & with the apnea it's even more important. Insist on regular testing. Most Drs run the test without mentioning it when they do a blood series, so you may have it done & didn't know it. The only annoying part of it is that you can't eat after taking it for 30-60 minutes. (don't take any acid reflux drugs or vitamins for 2 or 3 hours afterward either)
It really makes a difference in your energy level!

I specifically asked my doctor's nurse today if I had ever been tested for thyroid problems in the last 2 years that I have been seeing him? The nurse said no. Is this thyoid problem related mainly to sleep apnea because as I stated before the doctor who interpreted my study had that listed at the top of his list for things I should do.
He also suggested I lose weight; something I already know I should do but the thyroid problem I wasn't even aware of. There's no telling what other problems I might have. About taking the pill before eating my doc said it was OK but are you saying to not eat for at least one hour after taking the pill? Will I have to make some changes in the kind of food I eat once I start taking the pill? For example will I have to give up dairy products or spicy food? Thank you for your post.

My wife had full blown Grave's Disease in 1985. There are some severe consequences if you don't have it treated. She was a school teacher. Your
eyes and mine, thinking of a baseball diamond and standing at home plate.
Our "line of vision" might cross each other at 2nd base", but her vision deteriorated, while the Air Force doctors scratched their rear ends until her eyes
were pointing towards 3rd base and 1st base. That is somewhat of an exaggeration, but you get the idea. Her glasses had prisms so she could
work. They performed THREE surgeries on her eyelids as the liquid continued the buildup behind her eyes. The surgery was because her eyes were pushed so far out, her eyelids could not close at night. I held her hand through all
three surgeries. She had the ...what did they call them...goiters...when the neck bulges out...but it took a civilian doctor to treat it properly. He took one look at her, ran some test and nuked her thyroid. More surgery got her eyes
focused a lot better.

Thryoids are nothing to mess with. And changing drugs like Synthroid to
Levoxyl can mess some people up. Tricare said Synthroid was too expensive, she would have to try Levoxyl. We proved she had and they gave us more grief. We can get Synthroid at Costco....90 days for about $53.
Our copay was $9 a month, you do the math. Just be aware of how each
drug can interact with YOUR system. Make them explain WHY you are being changed around. Good luck with your meds.
Installing Software is like pushing a rope uphill.
I have Encore Pro 1.8.65 but could not find it listed
under software.

I LOVE the SV.

Your thyroid regulates your metabolism and brain funtion among a BUNCH of other things. I looked at my bottle when I got home and I am on 50 MCG's (not 25 as previously stated) and take it every morning before I get in the car to go to work. You have to take it before you eat----after that--there are really no other food restrictions to taking it. I felt lots more energy and lost weight once I found my thyroid was under producing and got started on taking the meds. I get blood work done very 6 months to keep a check on it to make sure the meds are still working. I just recently got told about the sleep apnea which probably was going on for over a year or so and I did not do anything about it. My spouse made me go get checked!!! I am glad that he did--I do feel better on the CPAP. Yeah--taking meds everyday is a pain --but if it is going to give you a life changing experience--it is worth it--right?
Carrie

I think the request was made for someone to share the "thyroid message board" url.
Seems quite a few cpap'rs have bad thyroids.

My mother had her thyroid operated on before she had us kids. She didn't take any meds that I am aware of. But the whole point is that you want to be checked regularly -- or at least the doc checks mine when I get a physical. My sister has had her thryoid levels messed up and they finally did some type of surgical procedure on her -- but I don't know if she still takes meds or not. So far I haven't had any trouble out of mine.

I do KNOW it is not something you want to mess around with.

All the women in my family have thyroid problems, interestingly some hyper, some hypo. My Grandma took thyroid most of her life (before the synthetic stuff, in the chopped up animal thyroid days.)

I have a goiter and my thyroid levels fluctuates. To tell you the truth I look forward to the day my thyroid decides what it's going to do so I can stop with the yo-yo action.

Good luck with your synthroid, my best friend says it's turned her life around, she has more energy, she lost weight, and her skin cleared up after she started.

Can anyone recommend a good website to go to where I can read more about thyroid problems as well as a good discussion board which deals primarily with thyroid related issues?

I've heard that phrase somewhere else before but I can't recall where I've heard it before but I'll eventually remember.
