some questions

Post by FLIGHTYONE » Sun Nov 25, 2007 9:50 am

well I have made it my goal to keep my mask on all night and it has been a struggle, the first night I was up 2 and a half hours wanting to take it off, i finally did and went straight to sleep,
Last night I did better didnt take it off till 630 in the morning, so that is great
here are my problems hopefully someone can help me
first in the middle of the night, i get up with my bridge of my nose hurting, it looks like it is raw now the bridge of my nose, not real bad but it is noticable , What can I do about that?
I am dealing with lots of leaks, I bought the lansinoh lotion but it just made the mask slided around, made it worse, the DME says that I am blowing my mask out at night,
When I get up morning and blow my nose it is just blood, what is this about,?

I have found that the lansinoh lotion made my arm itch so didn't try it under my nose (someone on the board suggested I try it on my arm since I am allergic to wool). I did use the Ayr gel for awhile but it seemed to make things worse in the morning as far as the mask sliding around. I think the humidity might need to be increased as went I went to blow my nose this morning I also had some blood. I wasn't using the humidifier till just a couple of nights ago and our house is really dry so I used it set at one. This setting uses approximately a little over 3/4 of a tank so I don't know how much I would use if I turned it up. I have the m series intergrated humidifier == wish I had the stand alone Fisher and Paykel. I had to purchase the humidifier outright and so don't know if I could get the insurance to help pay for the Fisher and Paykel if I got a prescription for it.

Sorry I don't really have any answers to your questions -- but you are not alone as I am experiencing some of the same problems.

It's about your DME setting you up for failure so that you can keep going back and they can keep charging your insurance.

You have been given a machine that does not provide useful data ... so it is very hard to determine the level of effective treatment you are getting.

You have either been given the wrong size mask or it was poorly fitted or possibly even the wrong mask for your facial structure all together.

Your DME should not just be telling you that you are blowing out your mask at night but rather telling you to come in to see what can be done about it ASAP.

The bloody nose indicates your heated humidifer is not set high enough or is not working.

All of these obstacles however should not discourage you from trying to make the treatment work. How long have you had your equipment? What is your pressure setting? Do you have your original copy of the Rx? Do you have a copy of your sleep lab study (the whole thing ... not just the sumary)? Are you able to pay out-of-pocket (ei. cash flow)? ... since in the long run it may be just as cost effective as using insurance.

Hang in there and keep participating in the forum and you will eventually get there ... best wishes!

The Ayr saline gel is for the inside of the nose, not the face

Are you using your normal machine, humidifier, mask? If not then then what are you using?

I ask because you had posted a few days ago about a titration study starting on Friday (I assume 2 nights ago).

the doctor is putting the titration off for 2 weeks so I can get used to the full mask and using it all night, I have had the machine since Sept but I gave up and stopped using it just started back about 2 weeks ago and I am giving it my all, I have the humditity set on 4 it only goes up to 5, the DME says that I shouldnt have it past a 3 but I know I need more if I use under a 4 I feel like I have the flu,
He told me Friday that I could have a choice of 2 other mask, I know one was the quattro not sure about the other one, it was a new thing, had the nasal part then a mouth part, I knew that wouldnt work for me,
I go back to him tomorrow, to tell him about my progress, I think I am going to give it another night then see, I know with the leaks to get them stopped the mask is so tight on my face, it hurts and leaves marks and it is only leaking at the bottom corners and only after about 4 hours into it

The mask you are using is my mask of preference. However, my face measures just between the small and medium size masks. When I use the medium, I get the leaking problem. When I use the small, I get a sore nose. I tend to use the small and use PADACHEEK's newest invention to keep the nose from being sore. Until she starts production, you can do what I used to do. Use small bandages or cut down larger bandages to put across the bridge of your nose and give a cushion under the mask. I tend to have skin problems so I used different sizes and brands to keep from getting a reaction to the adhesive. Good luck.
